The Research Assistant II-Core works within the Proteomics Laboratory of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center (MSRC) within the School of Medicine at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor for projects that apply mass spectrometry to the study of proteins and proteomes.

About the Work Unit:
The Proteomics Laboratory resides within the Mass Spectrometry Research Center at Vanderbilt University and provides state-of the-art MS instrumentation and analytical methods to analyze proteins and proteomes. New, high performance MS instruments and expertise in multiple analytical approaches provide exceptional flexibility in analytical proteomics approaches. These tools are integrated with powerful bioinformatics tools to mine, filter and assemble proteomics data.
The mission of the Mass Spectrometry Research Center (MSRC) is to bring state-of-the-art mass spectrometry expertise, methodology, and instrumentation to researchers at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. The Proteomics Core lab (3,600 sq ft) has nine LC-MS/MS instruments, including two LTQ ion traps, five Q Exactive Orbitraps, an Orbitrap Velos with ETD, and a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer.
Key Functions and Expected Performance:
Prepare samples using methods, such as protein precipitation, protein digestion, and in-gel digestion of proteins isolated by gel electrophoresis.
Protein identification and quantitation (label-based and label-free), identification of post-translational modifications.
Run samples on LC-MS/MS instrumentation, queues samples using specific data acquisition methods.
Analyze raw data files from LC-MS/MS experiments, provide scientific analysis of data for investigators.
Work with Proteome Discoverer, Sequest, MaxQuant, Scaffold, and other software packages to perform data analysis.
Responsible for instrumentation quality control.
Perform LC-MS instrument calibrations and evaluations.
Train new Core staff in sample preparation, instrument maintenance, and other laboratory protocols.
This position does not have supervisory responsibility; the position reports administratively and functionally to the Laboratory Director.
Education and Certifications:
A Bachelor's degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
A Master's degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is preferred.
Experience and Skills:
At least two years of relevant laboratory experience using HPLC, LC-MS or analytical chemistry.
Self-motivated with demonstrated attention to detail
Laboratory experience in analytical chemistry, proteomics, and protein chemistry
Experience with mass spectrometry, chromatography, protein gel electrophoresis, and proteomics data analysis is preferred.
Ability to learn quickly
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
