The IPD is a unique interdisciplinary environment where world-class researchers with expertise in computing and software, biochemistry, genome sciences, biological structure, pharmacology, immunology and other basic science disciplines, as well as clinical medicine, work together to both computationally design and experimentally characterize novel biomolecules. Current projects include the design of novel therapeutics for cancer, neurological diseases, and more, as well as new vaccines, nanomaterials, and enzymes.The UW Institute for Protein Design is seeking to hire a RESEARCH SCIENTIST ENGINEER 1 whose duties will be to provide experimental support for research projects as part of the Translational Science Program. The Research Scientist/Engineer will be part of a small team focused on the biophysical characterization of proteins for both internal investigators as well as external collaboratorsMain duties will include maintenance of X-ray systems, X-ray diffraction data collection in conventional systems in laboratory and using synchrotron facilities. Additional tasks will include support high-resolution microscopy and TEM, and helping with general lab support as needed under supervision.Candidate must have familiarity with high-throughput automated systems, and a high level of aptitude for new technologies in X-ray instrumentation and diffraction methods.Candidate must have excellent organizational, analytical, and record-keeping skills with the ability to organize and present technical reports to collaborators, IPD staff, management, and sponsors.Candidate must be proficient with sterile laboratory maintenance, and familiar with BSL1 requirements.Minimum Requirements:B.S in Biochemistry + 3 months or more years of experience in related fieldCandidates with knowledge in the use and maintenance of X-ray systems, familiarity with high-throughput automated systems, and X-ray diffraction methods.Desired Requirements:Hands-on experience in the use and maintenance of X-ray systemsExperience protein crystallization and X-ray in-hose and Synchrotron data collectionExperience in MicroscopyApplication Process:The application process for UW positions may include completion of a variety of online assessments to obtain additional information that will be used in the evaluation process.
