We are presently seeking a very-disciplined and highly self-motivated individual to assist in the group as a Proteomics Specialist to join the Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD. The individual should have a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from prior research experience. The successful candidate will develop and implement state-of-the-art mass spectrometry-based methods to identify, characterize and quantify proteins from complex protein mixtures such as cell lysates and human plasma samples submitted by Johns Hopkins Investigators. In addition, the candidate will operate and maintain a high-resolution tandem mass spectrometers such as Thermo Scientific Orbitrap Lumos and Q-Exactive and the requisite nano-scale liquid chromatography and Capillary Electrophoresis systems.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Operate and maintain highly technical mass spectrometers and two-dimensional chromatographic or electrophoresis equipment. Identify, advise or assist investigators with developing strategies for sample preparation for the use of gel electrophoresis, liquid chromatography, capillary electrophoresis and mass spectrometry to identify, quantify and characterize proteins and their modifications. Expand or develop new skills, as needed, based on information from literature, in collaboration with other laboratories or vendors, or by interacting with colleagues at meetings or professional presentations. Teach staff, students or fellows advanced techniques in protein analysis by mass spectrometry used in the center through informal discussions or formal workshops offered by the facility. The position also implies daily supervision of all aspects of the center functioning. The proteomics specialist is responsible for maintaining high-end mass spectrometers, developing and following SOPs, developing and maintaining collaborative connections with the investigators. The successful candidate will be involved in biomedical projects. Independent research in technological developments in proteomics will be strongly encouraged.
Master’s degree in biology, chemistry or related experience is required.
Two (2) years’ experience with protein/peptide separation and analysis by liquid chromatography - mass spectrometry is required.

Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Expertise in quantitative proteomics using label free (PRM, DIA) or labeling techniques (iTRAQ, TMT, SILAC or NeuCode)
Individual must have good communication skills, be able to work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgment.
