Under the general direction of the Dean of Students and Director of Student Life, the Associate Dean of Students (ADOS) provides leadership for the Office of the Dean of Students, including oversight of the SOU Cares reporting system, student conduct processes, Clery reporting, database management, and compliance with laws, policies, and regulations. The ADOS will provide direct supervision for the Coordinator of Community Standards, Student Support Assistants (student workers), and all processes related to student conduct intervention. The ADOS will provide training and education for conduct officers, as well as participants of the University Review Boards and Peer Review Boards. The ADOS will serve as the Vice-Chair of the Student Support Network (Behavioral Intervention Team) and provide training and education to the faculty, staff, and students related to SOU Cares and student conduct reporting. The ADOS will engage in triage, case assignment, and tracking related to SOU Cares and conduct cases. The ADOS will conduct annual assessment and annual revision of the Code of Student Conduct. The ADOS will develop and support group interventions aimed at improving retention of underserved populations and will serve as the primary liaison between the Office of the Dean of Students and student groups, including the Associated Students of Southern Oregon University. The ADOS will provide leadership and support to the professional staff assigned to Office of the Dean of Students and will serve Southern Oregon University by promoting a diverse campus culture that fosters student self-advocacy, civility, collegiality, and responsibility.
Minimum Classification Qualifications:
Master's degree in higher education, social work, or related field. Three years of experience in higher education leadership, student support, student conduct intervention, and retention efforts. Five years of experience in progressively responsible positions in higher education. The successful Associate Dean of Students will demonstrate exceptional written and oral communication skills.
Experience working with a behavioral intervention team, bias response, equity grievance, and/or provision of advocacy and student support services. Experience working with student conduct, investigations, community service or service learning, and group retention initiatives. Experience teaching and/or conducting training.
All Listed Duties:
Office of the Dean of Students – Operations –In coordination with the Dean of Students, provides leadership for the Office of the Dean of Students and the Student Support Network (Behavioral Intervention Team). –Serves as the Vice Chair of the Student Support Network with responsibility for case and data tracking, Clery compliance, applicable holds, and coordinated emergency intervention planning. –Provides operational oversight and database management for the SOU Cares reporting system, including review of all incoming reports, determination of acuity, triage, case assignment, and tracking. –Assists the Dean of Students, Student Support Network, and campus stakeholders in managing student crises, complex student concerns, and significant community-wide concerns. –Serves as the point of contact for Community Gatherings, which are events designed to process significant or impactful events and/or community bereavement. –Serves as the records custodian for all intervention and student conduct records. In coordination with the University Registrar, the ADOS responds to subpoena and background check requests. –Tracks and analyzes data related to reporting, risk factors, trends, and intervention efforts. –Leads assessment efforts on behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students, Student Support Network, student conduct, and applicable student success initiatives. –Serves as a member of the crisis management team with specific focus on reunification efforts. –Serves as the Clery compliance officer for the Office of the Dean of Students. –Leads efforts to integrate student appeal, exemption, and grievance processes. –Provides leadership for student support services workflow issues and communicates process improvements to internal stakeholders. –Provides oversight and leads efforts to improve compliance and customer service efforts to faculty, staff, students, family members, and other internal and external stakeholders. –Communicates with administrators, faculty, staff, advisors, coaches, and families as required. –Manages the website for the Office of the Dean of Students and related programs.
Student Success Services –Develops and serves as the primary point of contact for student success initiatives designed to provide group intervention and retention supports for underserved populations. –Provides support for historically underserved populations and veterans, reentry students, students in recovery, and students formerly in foster care. –Leads the institutional efforts at intervention and education through community service and restorative justice processes. –Conducts short-term intervention and case management for at-risk students, including support plan development, resource planning, and coordination with family members as appropriate. –Assists with Enrollment Management and Student Affairs activities as needed or assigned; must be prepared to provide support for evening and/or weekend functions and division initiatives. –Represents the Office of the Dean of Students on University committees and processes, including appeals, grievances, and inquiries. –Conducts risk assessment for at-risk students using a structured professional judgement guide. –Engages in investigation and intervention for student conduct and equity grievance cases. –Other duties as assigned.
Supervision and Education –Provides supervision and support for professional staff in the absence of the Dean of Students. –Supervises the Coordinator of Community Standards and Student Support Assistants (SSAs), including orientation, schedules, time accountability, and training. –Provides annual training for conduct officers and participants in student conduct boards. –Leads staff and student orientation efforts on behalf of the Office of the Dean of Students. –Educates campus constituencies on SOU Cares reporting, Student Support Network, and behavioral intervention. –Serves as the primary trainer for new staff using the case management database.
Special Instructions to Applicants:
Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours and adjust working hours to meet special jobs. May be called back periodically to perform work as needed on an emergency basis.
