Postdoctoral research fellowship: Structural biology of human telomere-associated complexes
A postdoctoral position is available beginning Fall 2019 in the lab of Jayakrishnan (JK) Nandakumar at the Department of Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Our lab studies the structure and function of telomeres and telomerase, which are protein-nucleic acid complexes that help maintain the ends of chromosomes. The current project involves the use of X-ray crystallography and current EM methods to solve the three-dimensional structures of protein-nucleic acid complexes found at chromosome ends.
The candidates should hold a Ph. D. degree, and a have strong background in molecular cloning and structural biology. Experience with protein expression (in E. coli and insect cells) and purification is required. Candidates with experience with purifying proteins/complexes from cultured human cells for structural purposes are strongly encouraged to apply. The candidate is expected to have expertise in collecting data, processing them and solving phases de novo. She or he will also be expected to overlook the crystallography wing of our lab. This will include helping with shipping crystal dewars, collecting data, and helping other trainees process their data (using XDS, CCP4i, Phenix, Coot, PyMOL, and other routine crystallography software). The project will involve the use of EM methods in parallel to X-ray crystallography. Therefore prior experience in at least negative-stain EM methods would be highly desirable.
