The Health and Retirement Study (HRS) is a multidisciplinary research program housed within the Survey Research Center (SRC) at the Institute for Social Research (ISR). The HRS is a large, longitudinal data collection and distribution project focusing on the health, wealth, work, and retirement patterns of the U.S. population over age 50. One focus is wealth in retirement pension plans.
This position is responsible for programming, development and maintenance of database systems for the pension project and consists of two phases. The first phase will involve learning how information contained in pension plans are analyzed and utilized to produce a dataset available to other researchers. The second phase will consist of designing, programming, testing and debugging new software to capture pension provisions.
Pension Plan Analysis
Analyze legal documents that describe the pension provisions provided by pension plan providers. Use mathematic expressions to capture pension plan provisions with existing software and database designed for this task. Evaluate the appropriateness of the calculated benefits for coded plans. Produce estimates of pension wealth utilizing pension plan provisions and information from the HRS survey.
Pension Software Programming
Design, write, test and document pension software to accommodate pension provisions and reduce the probability of coding errors. This includes both the front-end user interface and back-end database.
Make edits and fixes to code as per testing feedback.
Work with project staff to understand/clarify coding requirements and prepare designs for translating those into software components.
Meet deliverables in line with project timeline.

Discretion with handling confidential data is required.
Fluency in C# and VB.NET
Ability to write code independently and collaboratively

Candidate must possess skills to problem solve and anticipate and address project needs
Senior: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (preferred), a related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience and five (5) or more years of applications development in a professional setting.
Intermediate: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (preferred), a related field or equivalent combination of education and work experience and 3 to 5 years of applications development in a professional setting.
Master’s degree Computer Science or a related field
Knowledge of pension plans and plan characteristics
Training in economics, statistics and/or mathematics
