This position is a combination of a Student Success Coach and Instructor, to motivate and build confidence in first year students as part of a retention and success initiative. This position will require teaching university overview and study skills courses, meeting with students one-on-one or in small groups, and coordinating closely with student life staff. Although approximately 50% instruction, position will have staff-like rhythm (e.g., most of work week spent on campus).
Lead multiple 1 credit sections of University Exploration Survey, a mandatory course for first semester students. Course is pre-developed and requires presentations, grading, and coordination of several guest speakers. Course is an overview of campus resources as well as an introduction to OSU majors, degree requirements, academic planning, career exploring, and important policies and procedures.
Teach various study skills courses. For example, currently we offer two courses that were pre-designed by the Dennis Learning Center: Learning and Motivation Strategies for Success in College (https://dennislearningcenter.osu.edu/es-epsy-1259/) and Becoming a Self-Regulated Learner (https://dennislearningcenter.osu.edu/becoming-a-self-regulated-learner).
Work closely with Coordinator of Academic Success, Academic Advisors, and other Student Life and Success staff to develop and implement programs to support students. Act as liaison between students and resources available to them. Have a flexible schedule to work with individuals or small groups on study skills and other related needs.
