Post Doctoral Researcher Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis College of Engineering
The Foundation For A Better World's mission is to find cures for neurodegenerative diseases, improving access to quality education and supporting major global development initiatives in the developing world.
As part of this mission, the foundation has gifted funds to The Ohio State University's Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS) to invest in Microcrystal electron diffraction (Micro-ED) – an advanced electron microscopy technique that enables researchers to quickly resolve structures up to a billion times smaller than those needed using traditional methods. This funding will provide for the infrastructure, as well as for a postdoctoral research fellow, to lead the development of Micro-ED in the cryo-EM for biomedical research and drug discovery, specifically targeting diseases of the central nervous system.
We are seeking a motivated and enthusiastic researcher with an interest in electron crystallography and cryo-EM who will have the opportunity to collaborate with an extensive, multi-disciplinary team of faculty and scientists working together, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities and technologies, to advance the application of Micro-ED in biomedical sciences at The Ohio State University.
CEMAS has fourteen instruments valued at over $35M, including two dedicated cryo-TEMs (Krios & Glacios) as well as a cryo-dual beam focused ion beam instrument. The CMOS camera on the Glacios has been upgraded with a scintillator that has been optimized for Micro-ED. There will be opportunities to explore the role of cryo-FIB for sample preparation for Micro-ED to further develop the method and its potential applications
Plans and conducts research in the Center for Electron Microscopy and Analysis (CEMAS); performs high-level research using advanced electron microscopy equipment; works on development and implementation of the Micro-ED method; develop novel approaches for sample preparation, including cryo-FIB; interacts with appropriate faculty in multiple colleges and the Drug Discovery Institute; assists in design, execution, and interpretation of research projects; prepares research papers and manuscripts for presentations at conferences and workshops; prepares project reports, funding proposals, articles, and other documents for publication; oversees and mentors undergraduate and graduate student researchers in their thesis research.

PhD in Materials Science, Physical or Life Sciences field. Experience in electron microscopy or X-ray crystallography; ability to translate, adapt and apply academic and/or practical knowledge to the conduct advanced research; ability to multi-task and prioritize among many research projects; excellent written and oral communication skills; demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively as part of a team of multidisciplinary scientists.
Target Salary: $55,000.00 - $55,000.00 Annually
