Student Financial Support and Services at West Virginia University is seeking applicants for a Communications Specialist. As a key member of the SFSS team, this strong self-starter and experienced communicator will be responsible for identifying, shaping, managing, and analyzing the development of high-quality content for SFSS including - but not limited to - publications, graphics, news releases/announcements, web content, video content, social media, presentations, emails, letters, call scripts, auto-responses, and text messages.
In order to be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will:
Work with supervisors to develop and implement overall integrated strategic communication plans consistent with the goals of Student Financial Support and Services and West Virginia University. Writes and produces content for appropriate platforms based on target audience (including but not limited to web, social, and digital infostations).
Work with teams to ensure communication plan is executed by all applicable deadlines. This may include working with others to update the language of a planned communication, to gather the appropriate population, to code the language for the appropriate medium, ensuring flexibility as needs change, and liaising with University Relations when applicable.
Work as an integrated team member and key liaison for student-focused content and determines the most effective strategies (text, photography/graphic, video) and appropriate platforms (print, digital, social) to best enhance SFSS outreach to drive student success. This includes creating - and analyzing the success of - content for publications, graphics, news releases, announcements, web content, social media, presentations, emails, letters, call scripts, auto-responses, text messages, and text built within various platforms (such as BANNER, Campus Logic, and third-party mediums accessed by students).
Create content to help students understand the complexities of requirements they must meet with regards to the units within SFSS (the Mountaineer Hub, student accounts, financial aid, scholarships, debt management, refunds, payment, and more).
Collaborate as needed with staff to identify opportunities and gaps in communication. Serves as primary liaison and maintains regular and frequent contact with internal collaborators (SFSS) and external collaborators (University Relations, Admissions, Parents Club) to solicit relevant information and provide updates and counsel to meet communication needs, prioritize opportunities, and strategize execution. Makes recommendations to supervisor regarding solutions to identified communication gaps.
Build the visibility and reputation of SFSS through innovative usage of social media channels. Manages social media platforms and creates daily posts to generate public interest and promote SFSS. Creates, edits, and executes the social media calendar, including daily posts and data-driven social media campaigns. Engages with audiences on all social media platforms. Liaises with University Relations and key social media accounts to maximize the impact of SFSS social media posts. Reviews social media analytics on a weekly basis and recommends best practices or adjustments.
Monitor current trends in marketing, communications, and social media to evolve the strength of communications and outreach from SFSS.
Capture and create visual content through video, photography, and graphics for use on digital and print platforms.
Take the lead role in updating and maintaining SFSS websites, including Financial Aid, Blue to Gold, Student Employment, Student Accounts, and the Mountaineer Hub. Routinely coordinates with appropriate liaisons within each unit (subject matter experts) to obtain updates and information. This includes updating the calendar, announcements, and maintaining the timeline for reviewing and updating pages and the Mountaineer Hub institutional calendar.
Serve as primary communicator on planning, researching, and writing news releases or interviews (media relations) as needed by coordinating with University Relations to determine if SFSS is the appropriate avenue for response.
Organize and archive all communications, publications, digital, and media content to reference as needed.
Ensure accurate information, transparency, and compliance with federal, state, and institutional regulations and policies that involve communicating certain information to students as well as consumer information requirements for financial aid.
Serve on various WVU teams and committees including internal committees within SFSS.
Bachelor's degree required in communications, public relations, English, journalism, marketing or related field. Master's degree in related field is preferred.
Two (2) years of experience is required in one of the following:
News, communication, marketing, advertising or public relations position for a college, news media organization, government agency, business, or other knowledge-based organizations
Interviewing, writing, and editing
