The interdisciplinary Herman-Darrow Lab in the University of Minnesota Departments of Psychiatry and Neurosurgery is seeking a postdoctoral associate to conduct and analyze human neurophysiology and neurostimulation experiments. Our lab investigates the neural dynamics of decision making and translates findings into novel approaches to therapeutic neuromodulation in addiction, depression and chronic pain. We utilize machine learning tools to study neural computations within brain regions and the flow of information between them. Neural signatures of information processing that correspond to behavior are then selected for study as potential biomarkers and targets for therapeutic brain stimulation. We apply bayesian inference and control theory to determine the patterns of stimulation that optimize therapeutic outcomes.
Lab methods: Intracranial electrophysiology, magnetoencephalography, invasive brain stimulation, non-invasive brain stimulation (transcranial magnetic stimulation), signal processing, psychophysics, neuroeconomics, clinical research, computational modelling. Over time, you will be expected to become familiar with these methods at both a conceptual and technical level.

Designs, implements and analyzes human neurophysiological and neurostimulation experiments.
Writes text and creates figures for publications and grant applications.
Attends and presents at conferences.
Supervises graduate and undergraduate students, technicians and/or interns.

A doctoral degree in a relevant field (neuroscience, psychology, engineering, physics, computer science) with publications in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with neurophysiology (human or animal), psychophysics and/or brain stimulation.
Strong programming and/or data analysis skills. MATLAB or Python is essential. C/C++ (and derivatives), LabVIEW, and scripting languages could be useful.
Prior experience with data acquisition hardware and/or creating real-time systems would be helpful.
Previous experience with epilepsy, movement disorder and/or psychiatric patient populations, the biological mechanisms of mental illness, or medical device development.
Signal processing, control engineering, software and/or electrical engineering background.
