Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Department of Urology, the laboratory of Dr. Kenneth Pienta is seeking a well-qualified, driven research specialist. The successful candidate will be expected to be proficient in a large repertoire of research techniques that will allow them to work in both an independent manner as well as part of a collaborative team within the laboratory and with collaborators at JHU and other institutions. In addition to their research responsibilities, the position will also play a role in various aspects of managing the laboratory.
The Research Specialist will work independently on assigned projects, utilizing established research protocols as well as base knowledge of general laboratory procedures and skills. Will likely serve as the primary bench scientist on 1-2 projects at a time, while also performing other tasks that are related to other ongoing projects in the lab or on tasks that are for the overall benefit of the lab and its members, per the PI’s discretion.
Expected to make significant/important contributions to various aspects of research efforts. This may include troubleshooting, independent decisions and training/guidance of other lab personnel. Stay current on relevant published research and to incorporate recent findings into the development of their research.
In conjunction with assigned projects, the position will be required to run lab tests and complete measurements assigned utilizing standard or established laboratory protocols.
This includes the set-up of experiments based on defined standards, the collection of project data, analyzing and interpreting results, making conclusions based on the collected data, and designing follow-up experiments.
Use of basic scientific knowledge to learn techniques/methods of the lab and/or new techniques/methods. While many aspects of the position’s duties will utilize standard laboratory tasks and/or the completion routine assays following common or established protocols and procedures.
Contribute to the development of new research protocols or the modification of existing protocols to improve efficiency/productivity.
Expected to gain problem solving skills through progressive training, understanding of the research, and experience.
The Research Specialist will also play a role in experiments/projects that utilize animal models. This role will include both project specific animal procedures as well as assisting with maintaining the lab’s own mouse colony.
As a staff member of the research team, the position may also be asked to prepare, test, and maintain standard laboratory equipment. Perform related laboratory maintenance, monitoring inventory of supplies, cleaning equipment, and/or ordering of research/laboratory supplies. Guide and train other JHU employees or trainees (undergraduate, graduate, or post-doc) in experiments and laboratory assays utilizing specialized equipment such as flow cytometers, use of standard equipment, and/or other routine lab techniques/procedures.
As a member of the Pienta Laboratory, the Research Specialist will be expected to present research findings and data at regularly occurring lab meetings. Will help write and/or compile data/figures for peer-reviewed as well as potentially present research findings and data at research conferences as directed by the laboratory director.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry or related field. One year laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for some experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum experience required for the respective job.
