Department: VET MED TEACHING HOSPITAL - 072105 Department Description: The Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) is a unit that provides clinical case material in support of the teaching programs throughout the School of Veterinary Medicine on a 24-hour basis. Its primary objectives are to train professional (veterinary) students, graduate clinical students (interns and residents), and graduate academic students; to provide veterinary services to the public; to serve as a referral center for practicing veterinarians, and to advance veterinary medical knowledge.

Job Summary: Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis, and inducing (RVT required) and monitoring anesthesia. Provide emergency and critical care nursing to small animal patients and technical support to clinicians, staff and students. Provide quasi-instruction to students. Provide temporary support to other VMTH departments as assigned. Provide facility maintenance.
Physical Demands: - Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) as required.
- Remain standing for long periods of time.
- Bend and stoop to care for patients low to the ground.
Work Environment: -Must be able to work occasional overtime; work weekends, evenings, holidays and variable hours. In emergency or illness situations, may work alternate shift.
-May be required to use a respirator during decontamination cleanings.
-Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
-May be required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.
-Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
-May require working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
-Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

Minimum Qualifications: -Interpersonal, oral and written communication skills to communicate diplomatically and professionally utilizing medical terminology.
-Skill to independently provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
-Experience working in a small animal clinic as a veterinary assistant.
-Experience in assessing an emergent or critically ill patient's condition and initiate appropriate action.
-Experience calculating drug doses and administering medications.
-Experience using patient monitoring equipment (ECG, Invasive and non-invasive BP, CVP, ET-CO2, Pulse Oximeter, etc.)
-Knowledge of common emergency and critical care therapies and procedures.
-Experience intubating a patient with an endotracheal tube and caring for patients with artificial airways.
Preferred Qualifications: -Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license.
-Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Emergency and Critical Care (AVECCT Certified).
-Experience working in an emergency critical care setting as a veterinary assistant.
-Skill in the placement of a multi-lumen catheter in either a peripheral or central vein and utilize proper technique(s) to secure and maintain the catheter.
-Skill to insert catheters (urinary and arterial).
-Ability to perform the following laboratory test utilizing the appropriate analyzer: Blood gases, hematocrit, total protein, BUN, Glucose, Creatinine, electrolytes (serum and urine), activated clotting time, osmolality, colloid oncotic pressure, and lactate.
-Skill to utilize mechanical ventilators.
-Experience instructing and evaluating students.
-Experience in using the VMTH Computer System VMACS
