The Indiana Jacobs School of Music is among the largest music schools in the nation with more than 1,600 students, 180 artist/faculty, and 80 staff members. Oversees and manages the Jacobs School of Music percussion instrument collection. Maintains and repairs percussion instrument inventory; ensures all instruments are kept at concert ready standard; provides full annotated inventory annually. Designs and builds new and custom instruments to meet special needs. Monitors collection; lends out instruments as part of outfitting orchestras, bands, and ensembles; maintains accurate records of each instrument’s location; coordinates instrument availability between musical groups; and responds to calls and inquiries regarding availability. Supervises and assists with equipment moves. Monitors condition of instruments; makes recommendations regarding salvageability and purchases. Provides orientation briefing and informational tours for new students; generates recommendations regarding student assets to collection. Maintains inventory of parts, tools, and supplies; repurchases as necessary. Oversees security of storage areas. Supports all IU Jacobs School of Music summer events IU SMC, SPAW, etc. Assists in other assigned duties as determined by the department chair.
REQUIRED: Two years post-high school training in percussion instrument repair and two years of percussion instrument repair experience.
Knowledge of percussion instruments, appropriate repair materials, and hand tools. Good hearing, mechanical aptitude, and manual dexterity. Good verbal and written communication skills including the ability to communicate with a wide range of people (faculty, staff, students, vendors, etc.). Basic budgetary and bookkeeping skills.
Knowledge of drafting and design.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands:
Must be able to sit, stand, kneel, stoop, walk, hear, talk, move large percussion instruments by pushing, pulling, or lifting.
