Essential Job Duties:
The primary purpose of the ORI Business Operations Accountant is to provide a broad range of financial support to ORI units and research centers. This position is a key contributor to the Integrated Support Service Center (ISSC) and serves as the primary point-of-contact for all financial transactions for ORI service offices.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Independently monitors and manages the University Strategic Research Fund
Leads quarterly alignment activities for $30M of state and overhead funding
Works collaboratively with faculty, ORI leadership, and OFA to devlop and maintain service center rates
Proactively monitors spending in discretionary accounts to ensure strategic utilization of ORI resources
Responsible for initiating a variety of financial transactions across funding types, including state funding, F&A, discretionary, and research funding
Serves as the primary point-of-contact on all fiscal matters for ORI's assigned unit, serves as back-up for other ISSC team members
Initiates and monitors financial transactions related to the Strategic Research Fund and other special funding sources
Leads the internal and external billing processes for customers of major service centers; initiates billing, resolves complex issues with external and international customers, and serves as POC for Directors of service centers
Independently manages annual asset management process
On a regularly scheduled basis, prepare and disseminate both regular and irregular financial reports to the ORI Business Officer, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, the Vice Chancellor, ISSC customers and/or other executive ORI staff.
Display an exemplary and dedicated sense of positive customer service and a very high degree of availability and accessibility to all clients. Work well with other ORIISSC team members. Listen and respond appropriately to clients. Must possess the ability to assist clients in finding creative solutions to meeting business needs and objectives using a positive can-do attitude and innovative thinking. Demonstrate flexibility and versatility in adapting to the overall needs of the operational unit.
Maintains knowledge of NCSU accounting rules and standards for state funding, and is able to communicate best practices to customers.
Integral in compiling the National Science Foundation (NSF) Herd Survey on behalf of ORI, for the entire university. Manages the financial analysis to interpret and report metrics to NSF. Analysis is performed on expenditures exceeding $3.5 billion. Mistakes and/or errors have strong impacts on NCSU national and international rankings.
Heavily contributes to the F&A Allocation performed by ORI for the entire university. Performs complex financial analysis and manipulation for over $56 million. Requires a high level of accuracy and precision. Works directly with the Senior Director of Research Fiscal Affairs.
Other duties as assigned
Bachelor’s degree with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or Associate’s degree in Accounting; or Associate’s degree in Business or related discipline with 12 credit hours of accounting coursework; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
High-level of knowledge of Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Word and adaptability in utilizing desktop and web-based computing productivity and efficiency tools. Must possess an excellent aptitude for detailed numerical and data manipulation, work-sheet and documentation maintenance and production and operating in an organized paperless office environment where record-keeping work and communication with clients and colleagues is performed in an electronic and virtual environment.
Excellent organizational and communication skills: Must provide case status reporting and follow-up with clients and colleagues on a regular basis without reminder.
Detail oriented with a solid commitment to accuracy in all tasks
Able to multi-task to meet critical deadlines and manage workflow in a timely manner. Must be able to self-monitor calendar deadlines, reminders and ticklers and insure adequate lead-times are maintained.
Ability to interpret financial guidelines, answers general inquiries and advise others regarding processes, services, and operations as applied to a broad range of varied and possibly unique situations
Must be adaptable to ISSC operational best-practices.
Must be able to maintain a professional demeanor at all times and display the necessary patience required to serve in an advanced capacity.
Prefer a bachelor’s degree with at least one year of professional experience,
Prefer experience at NC State University or other higher education institutions
