Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Assistant, Community Outreach Specialist, for the Department of Cancer Health Equity and Engagement at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
The Community Outreach Specialist implements and presents health education programs and is responsible for curriculum development and/or the implementation of health education for the Rutgers Cancer Institute, the Screen NJ Program and related efforts in the Rutgers Cancer Institute's department of Cancer Health Equity and Engagement. This position is responsible for planning, scheduling, outreach, training, program delivery and evaluations, communications and event participation.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Implements health education programs through community presentations, seminars and workshops, using in-person and virtual methodologies.
Sets up and uses audio-visual equipment (e.g., projector, computer, speakers) and troubleshoots minor technical configuration issues (e.g., connection issues between computer and projector) at events and meetings.
Works with team members and community stakeholders to plan, organize, implement and evaluate community engagement and outreach activities.
Performs community level engagement and outreach needs assessment.
Participates in community advisory council and workgroup meetings and focus groups.
Researches, identifies and utilizes evidence-based educational programs.
Writes, designs, and manages the production and distribution of visually appealing, culturally and literacy appropriate educational programs (i.e. content for brochures, e-newsletters, program development, event materials, info graphics), media press releases, and other communications/marketing materials.
Participates in phone, electronic, and in-person communications and meetings with outreach-relevant partner contacts, subject matter experts, and professionals to support the development and improvement of programs.
Serves as a liaison with potential partners, partners, and others with community outreach and engagement-related inquiries.
Participates in preparation for, and attends community outreach and engagement-related meetings and events.
Takes meeting minutes and prepares typed notes and action items.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration, Social Science or a related discipline, plus one (1) year of related experience in a business office, government agency or university setting.
Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Effective oral and communication skills.
Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.
Excellent analytical, organizational, communication, writing and interpersonal skills.
One year of community outreach research experience and public health research experience conducting community-based research.
Knowledge and understanding of public health, healthcare, and health education principles and practices.
Strong interest in health disparities.
Fluent in Spanish or Hindi desired.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking and hearing. No special vision requirements. Lifting up to 25lbs
Significant in-state travel to partner locations and program events.
Valid driver's license and clean driving record.
Must possess own vehicle or alternative means of transportation for site visits.
Outreach activities / duties may occur during evening or weekend hours.
