The Assistant Director of Development and Volunteer Leadership is a key member of the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences’ (KSAS) External Relations team. This position serves the School’s fundraising effort by identifying and cultivating new volunteer leaders, encouraging a culture of philanthropy, and soliciting major and lead-annual gifts to support the priorities of the Krieger School. This position is responsible for independently managing two of the KSAS volunteer leadership groups. The position will manage the groups’ programmatic and fundraising activity in a thoughtful and strategic manner to advance the school’s priorities. They will play a critical role in developing the school’s major gift fundraising pipeline. The position will also provide support for other KSAS volunteer leadership groups and committees. This position will report directly to the Sr. Associate Director of Development and will work collaboratively with the Director of Constituent Engagement.
Enhance the school’s pipeline of alumni leaders and secure critical financial support (50%)
Make a minimum of 80 in-person visits and an equivalent amount of substantive contacts per year to qualify, engage, and recruit new philanthropic and volunteer leaders. These will also be top prospects for the Second Decade Society (SDS) and other volunteer leadership positions across KSAS. Partner with central offices (Annual Giving, Regional Programs, and International Programs) and within the KSAS Development team to establish and advance relationships with donors, including annual visits and quarterly touches with the most promising candidates for leadership growth.
Establish fundraising goals and priorities for SDS and other volunteer groups under management that are closely aligned with the school’s needs; present these goals and projects for approval by the Senior Director of Development and Sr. Associate Director of Development.
Make the case for support of the University and personally solicit at least 75 annual gifts and at least 5 major gifts.
Independently identify new philanthropic leaders for the school. Proactively seek out leadership qualities and major gift capacity.
In partnership with KSAS and central offices, and independently as appropriate, develop giving strategies for each member of SDS and other members of boards under management to maximize volunteer giving.
Oversee the entry and maintenance of all substantive prospect interactions, including visits, events, and phone and electronic communications, and solicitation approaches and gift plans in the JHU development database.
Strategic and Operational Management of Volunteer Leadership Groups (50%)
Assume oversight and management responsibilities for two volunteer leadership groups: the Second Decade Society (SDS), a group consisting of KSAS alumni donors who have graduated within the last ten to twenty years, and the Center for Financial Economics (CFE) Advisory Council, a group consisting principal and major gift prospects along with emerging leaders in finance. Both groups function to provide counsel and philanthropic support to the school.
Work closely with the volunteer leadership of SDS and CFE, as well as university administrators and staff, to ensure that the groups are engaged in meaningful work that will advance the school. Ensure that campaign and divisional priorities are communicated to both groups in a timely and strategic fashion.
Coordinate the annual solicitation of each member through mail, peer-to-peer solicitations, and/or face-to-face solicitations. Prepare and deliver meaningful, relevant communications to members frequently through various means including websites, conference calls, periodic e-newsletters, and other electronic and in-person interactions.
Independently plan and organize two semi-annual meetings and up to three annual events for SDS, including meetings and events in locations reflective of the geographic distribution of the membership. Prepare agendas, briefings, talking points, and other event materials as necessary. Direct event logistics for each meeting and event. Provide similar independent support for CFE including Wall Street Today and Summer Finance events, among others.
Manage the operational needs of SDS; oversee and advance the activity of four or more standing SDS committees, including regular conference calls, and the annual Meg Walsh Award and Summer Internship Grant selection processes; exercise independent judgment on a daily basis, troubleshoot and resolve issues that arise, keep Director of Constituent Engagement apprised of operations and administration as necessary.
Coordinate meaningful stewardship for volunteer leaders, with activities like, but not limited to, fall thank you card mailing, end of fiscal year newsletter update, thank you gifts for graduating members and the outgoing SDS National Chair, etc.
Work with the Director of Constituent Engagement to develop onboarding and succession plans for top volunteers, including membership on other KSAS and University leadership boards as necessary.
Create and manage systems for tracking volunteer leaders to ensure successful transitions and enhance planning efforts; independently evaluate and develop succession plans for review by the and Director of Constituent Engagement.
Provide support for volunteer leadership groups and committees in Arts and Sciences; with activities including, but not limited to, planning and logistics, compiling materials and minutes, writing briefings, and event support.
Represent the University and the School through frequent and varied interactionwith volunteer leadership including the Board of Trustees, $1+ million donors and other alumni, as well as vice presidents, deans, department chairs, faculty, staff, and vendors.
Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification:
Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Bachelor’s degree required. Two years related experience required. Additional graduate level education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred qualifications: Experience in higher education. Customer service and fundraising experience preferred.
