This position will perform experiments aimed at understanding the development of obesity and diabetes using mouse models, both independently and as part of a team in the laboratory of Dr. Alyssa Hasty. This position will set up and conduct experiments, and implement long-term research projects following protocols including the appropriate recording and reporting of data. This position will assist in other laboratory and research functions and work closely with post-docs and students as part of the Hasty Lab team. Reporting directly to Dr. Hasty and/or lab manager, Marnie Gruen, the position is highly collaborative and requires excellent teamwork. Dr. Hasty's Laboratory studies immune-mediated mechanisms by which obesity increases risk of diseases such as diabetes. The Hasty lab members are a tight-knit community consisting of a lab manager, 3 postdocs, 3 graduate students, and various temporary students.
Duties and responsibilities
Independently or as part of a team, run experiments, assays, and record results
oConduct scientific experiments for multiple metabolic research projects within the Hasty Lab
Compile and communicate results to supervisor and team
Follow University safety protocols (may include use of combustibles, radioactivity, and/or toxic material)
Prepare and operate equipment in experimental procedures
May include blood gas analyzer, centrifuge, pH meter, spectrophotometer, autoclave, electrophoresis unit, analytical balance, etc.
Ensure laboratory is prepared for experiments
Maintain sterile conditions as required
Prepare reagents and materials
Perform general husbandry tasks such as feeding mouse diets and performing treatments
Work closely as a team with Hasty Lab personnel to ensure cohesion and success of long term experiments
Profile of an Ideal Candidate
SSThis position requires a BA or BS degree.
SSExperience with animal handling and/or husbandry is strongly preferred.
SSExperience with general laboratory techniques is preferred but not required.
SSExcellent communications skills and good teamwork is required.
