Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
The Smith Lab at the University of Minnesota (www.smithneurolab.org) is seeking a highly motivated individual to join a recently formed lab in the Optical and Brain Sciences Medical Discovery Team (www.med.umn.edu/brain-science). Our lab studies the development and functional organization of the visual cortex using in vivo multiphoton imaging. This is a part time position, approximately 20 hours a week. Precise hours and schedule will vary based on ongoing experiments in the lab.
Perform and assist with laboratory research (70%): • Work closely with principal investigator (lab head), postdoctoral researchers, and graduate students to perform imaging experiments and perform stereotaxic surgery. • Monitor animals during and following surgery, and maintain detailed records of procedures. • Participate in lab meetings to report on data and discuss findings.
Ordering and receiving lab supplies (15%): • Place orders with vendors, track items, and ensure that orders are received. Maintain records of ordered items. • Ensure that lab supplies are organized and appropriately stocked.
General support (15%): • Perform other general laboratory duties required for experiments, such as: checking for proper function of isoflurane filters, balances, oxygen tanks, heating pads, cleaning and preparing surgical tools, etc. • Prepare common laboratory stock solutions (such as phosphate buffer, fixative, ethanol). Ensure that laboratory supplies are within expiration dates, and identify supplies soon to expire.
Salary Range: $15.44 to $16.46 USD/hour
All required qualificaitons must be documented on application materials.
Required qualificaitons: • High School diploma. • Basic university coursework in neuroscience/biology, chemistry, and math and lab experience. • Excellent organization, communication, and record-keeping skills. • Ability to work with and care for small animal subjects.
Preferred qualificaitons: • Experience with small animal research in a neuroscience setting.
