The Gift & Garden Store is the primary location for retail revenue which supports the operations of the Arboretum. The staff is comprised of 1 full-time and 10-15 part-time front-line employees, depending on the season, and six volunteers along with a management team. In addition, a second satellite store is open from August thru November and is included in the scope of retail operations. Additional pop-up stores may be added in the future. This position is responsible for leading all Gift Store floor staff and volunteers. This position functions as the point person in the absence of the manager for store operations, merchandising decisions and issues related to buying. This position must be able to collaborate across all Arboretum departments to promote and advance the objectives of the store.
This position has a rotating schedule, 5 days, 8 hours a day including some weekends and evenings.
Inventory Buying Support-50% • Assist store manager in making buying decisions. • Advise the manager and continuously be aware of new artists, vendors and product lines that would be a good fit for the store. • Stay aware of retail trends and the product selection and merchandising ideas of competitive stores. • Understand the dynamics of the Arboretum as a non-profit, University of Minnesota affiliated entity. • Have a clear understanding of the buying preferences of the Arboretum customer while at the same time, working to attract a new customer demographic. • Work with the Open-To-Buy guideline to stay within budget on Materials for Resale. • Order packaging and supplies for both the store and the AppleHouse.
Gift Store Floor Team Lead -25% • Assist store manager in hiring decisions. • Orient and train all new staff and volunteers. • Provide direction to current front line staff and volunteers regarding cashiering, receiving, data entry and customer service. • Assign daily work projects to staff and volunteers based on the needs of the store on any given day. • Attend skill-enhancing classes as available including the University's complete diversity program. • Keep manager informed and updated. Function as a liaison to other departments staying current with Arboretum upcoming events and determining the impact on the store. • Become proficient and learn to problem solve on the current POS system and future POS systems. • Stay aware of the need for inventory control and keep manager informed. • Taking all direction from store manager, function as a team player with store management and the store business office assistant.
Merchandising Support-25% • At the direction of the manager, take the lead in merchandising current inventory, using innovative display ideas and maximizing use of existing fixtures. • Develop a planogram for store merchandise, both existing and future purchases. • Recommend to manager, changes in space allocation based on sales per square foot for current departments.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS • BA/BS degree or a combination of related education and retailing/merchandising education/ experience to equal four years • Successful completion of a background check.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS • Three years supervisory experience in a retail setting. • Demonstrated written and organizational skills with attention to details. • Three years experience in customer service/retail sales. • POS and Microsoft Office experience • Experience in merchandise sourcing, buying, visual merchandising and inventory. • Previous work experience that demonstrates self-motivation and creative problem solving.
