Public Safety Dispatcher Lead - University Police Department 12030
The University Police Department at West Virginia University, is seeking applications for a Public Safety Dispatcher Lead position. In the interest of public service and community safety, through guidance, training, leadership and collaboration, this position will maintain, advise, and under the supervision of the Staff Officer, accomplish improvements to the systems and service of the Emergency Communications and Records center.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Perform the duties of a Communications Officer with the West Virginia University Police Department both on the assigned shift and in times of need, to other shifts.
Identify, maintain or provide for the maintenance of; hardware, software, electronic and manual systems related to the Emergency Communications, video monitoring, alarm and records center. Based on 24/7 emergency operation.
Monitor the abilities, capabilities and skills of the West Virginia University Police Department Communications Officer, Train or cause to be trained, and provide suggestions as to the best course of action for the training of newly assigned personnel or training of existing personnel in newly acquired systems. Record and report progress for both newly assigned and existing personnel and provide data and suggestions to the Staff Officer for action. In addition, provide or cause remedial training to existing personnel where identified deficiencies exist. Suggest system development and/or improvement. Advise, report and or suggest disciplinary actions needed for employee issues to Lead Communications Officer.
Assist and or provide support to the Chief, Administrative staff and other units in special projects, desired research, expansion of our function (evidence, inventory, etc.). Additionally provide support to agencies outside our Department including our regional campuses (travel may be required).
Other duties which may be assigned including, but are not limited to; unforeseen needs and duties normally performed by an officer, but not directly associated with the law enforcement function. This includes overtime duties where a trained and uniformed, but not "armed" presence is needed.
Pay Grade: 15 , WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary
Associate's Degree preferably in the legal field and/or office environment.
A combination of education and experience will also be considered
The ability to type at least 30 words per minute.
At least one (1) year of experience in administrative duties.
At least two (2) years of dispatcher experience including emergency communications.
At least six (6) months of supervisory/lead experience is preferred.
Physical demands include:
Ability to sit for long periods daily
Lift moderate weight daily
Eye-hand coordination required daily
Must be able to talk, listen, and write simultaneously under stressful conditions daily
Ability to withstand all types of noise level. May very weekly
Work shift adjustments occasionally
Within six (6) months of hire:
Terminal Agency Operator certification through the West Virginia Automated Police Network.
Communications Center Supervisor Course certification through the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials
Red Cross First Aid Certification
Red Cross or American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification
Within one (1) year of employment:
National Criminal Information System certification
Public Safety Telecommunicator Instructor certification
Communications Training Officer Course certification through the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials
