Position Summary and ResponsibilitiesVassar College Libraries seeks creative and entrepreneurial candidates for the position of Head of Academic Engagement. The Head of Academic Engagement provides leadership and vision for connecting the Vassar College Libraries' collections, services, and expertise with emerging needs in coursework and research. Supervising a team of four librarians, the Head of Academic Engagement fosters collaborative relationships with constituents across the College, as well as with library colleagues in all areas. The Head actively seeks opportunities to respond to emerging needs, including through instruction and research consultation, collaboration on special projects, digital scholarship support, and community programming. Working with subject liaisons and department heads, the incumbent provides strategic guidance and support in the design and delivery of research and instruction services. The incumbent also works closely with the Director's office to advocate for the work of the library through outreach, communications, and branding efforts. The Head of Academic Engagement serves as a liaison to academic departments, as needed.
The Head of Academic Engagement, along with the Academic Engagement librarians, plays a key role in making decisions regarding initiatives that ensure VCL has a significant and positive impact on the academic life at Vassar. The incumbent also serves as part of the Vassar College Libraries' senior management team and participates in discussions that impact all areas of the libraries.
This opportunity comes at a particularly exciting time for Vassar, as a newly designed curriculum places greater emphasis on students working outside of traditional classroom settings, creating new opportunities for partnerships across campus.
Qualifications Qualifications: Master's degree in Library and Information Science with an advanced degree in another subject area strongly desired, or, an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience managing reference, instruction, or outreach staff in an academic setting, including at least 3 years of supervisory experience. Advanced knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in pedagogy and library research & instruction services. Demonstrated ability to conceive and execute new initiatives in pursuit of organizational goals. The ability to provide clear goals, priorities, expectations, and advocacy for staff. Excellent communications skills and a demonstrated ability to work productively and collegially with colleagues across departments. Competence and sensitivity in working at a college in which students are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.
