A postdoctoral associate position on infectious disease modeling is available in the Department of Population Health and Pathobiology at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine. The successful applicant will be working with an interdisciplinary team primarily led by Dr. Cristina Lanzas' Computational Biology group in collaboration with Dr. Derek Foster (Antimicrobial Resistance and Ruminant Medicine) and Dr. Ronald Baynes (Drug Residue Pharmacokinetics and Residue Avoidance). Applicants with a background in mathematical modeling of infectious diseases and/or population biology are highly encouraged to apply. Our research combines data, epidemiological analysis and mathematical models to study transmission mechanisms, and to identify and design control measures to reduce the public health burden associated with infectious diseases with emphasis on the role that environment plays on transmission and the dissemination of enteric and antimicrobial resistant pathogens.
The research focus will be the transmission and control of infectious diseases caused by enteric pathogens (specifically Clostridium difficile, Enterohaemorrhagic E. coli, and Salmonella), the use of mathematical modeling to study the antimicrobial resistance dissemination at multiple scales, and the effect of intestinal microbial disruption by treatments such as antibiotics and their withdrawal on emergence of resistance, host susceptibility and pathogen transmission. A number of potential research projects are available and so the research focus may be tailored to the interests and skills of the individual.
The postdoctoral associate will be expected to carry out independent work, make presentations regarding his/her research, to publish their research results in peer-reviewed journals, to participate in grant proposal preparation, and to interact with faculty, postdoctoral associates, and graduate students at the College of Veterinary Medicine.
Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate (e.g., M.D., D.V.M., Sc.D.) in appropriate field awarded no more than five (5) years from initial date of postdoctoral appointment.
The applicant must have experience in R and/or MATLAB. Experience developing and implement agent-based models and/or multi-scale models is desirable.
