The School of Public Health and Health Professions (SPHHP) at the University at Buffalo (UB), The State University of New York (SUNY), seeks a Chair for the Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health (EEH). The Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health (formerly Social and Preventive Medicine) is celebrating 100 years of contributions to the health of Buffalo, the region, the nation and the world. The Department has longstanding distinction and a rich history of epidemiologic research and education. In addition to Epidemiology, the department has two divisions, Environmental Health Sciences and Health Services Policy and Practice, and houses academic programs that include three M.P.H. programs (epidemiology, environmental health and health services administration) and M.S. and Ph.D. programs in epidemiology. The Department is part of the School of Public Health and Health Professions, which was founded in 2003 and is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The University at Buffalo is the State University of New York’s largest and most comprehensive research-intensive university and is its primary center for professional education and training, as well as a member of the Association of American Universities.
We seek a Chair with a strong record of excellence in academic leadership and scholarly activity (including peer-reviewed extramurally funded epidemiologic, environmental health and/or health services research), and enthusiasm to grow the Department’s academic and research programs. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in epidemiology or related discipline and/or an M.D. or other professional degree, with training in epidemiology and/or public health, or equivalent. Candidate will be at the rank of full professor or with demonstrated academic experience and scholarship to be appointable at the rank of full professor with tenure. A strong record of successful administrative leadership is desired. The candidate should also have experience in education and the ability to provide leadership for the educational program. Collaborative skills are essential. Candidates should demonstrate enthusiasm and vision for advancing the department's academic programs, research portfolio and service engagement. The Department of Epidemiology and Environmental Health prides itself in its multidisciplinary faculty, with faculty research focused on chronic diseases (e.g., cancer, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, periodontal disease, diabetes, eye disease), environmental health, global health, infectious disease, women’s health, genetics, nutrition, and health disparities. The Department has a history of strong collaborations with faculty from other departments in the School of Public Health and Health Professions, from other Schools in the UB Academic Health Center (Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, Dental Medicine, and Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences), as well as with faculty from within and outside of the University at Buffalo. Faculty also collaborate with other regional affiliated institutions, including Roswell Park Cancer Institute, the Clinical Research Institute on Addictions, hospital systems, agencies and health departments in the western NY region. The School of Public Health and Health Professions is currently expanding with a new and growing undergraduate program in public health (established 2016). The University also claims other available resources which include large-scale University initiatives focused on interdisciplinary research, education, and engagement (e.g., a Community of Excellence in Global Health Equity; a Community of Excellence in the Genome, the Environment and the Microbiome; and the Research and Education in eNergy, Environment and Water (RENEW) initiative).
