Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
Proficient research and/or clinical laboratory specialist with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from professional laboratory and research experience.
Under minimal supervision, performs clinical and/or research laboratory experiments by following established procedures and protocols.Participates in the design of experiments and analyzes data. Works independently and manages daily research projects. The senior research specialist will assist the principal investigator in the development and coordination of projects, experimentation, data collection/maintenance, and organization of the laboratory. Runs lab tests and completes measurements as assigned. Identifies and resolves problems and uses analytical and decision making skills to implement assigned projects. Produces and maintains meticulous laboratory notes/documentation and may contribute to result presentations and manuscripts.
Duties and Responsibilities
% of Time
Performing research lab experiments to include:1)routine molecular and cell biology assays; 2) in vivo animal models; 3) basic cellular immunology assays including growing T cells and flow cytometry; and 4) Protein purification and QC.Records and reports all laboratory activities, laboratory notes, and outcomes in a detailed and organized manner.
Performs as Lead, responsible for training and lab lead of histology technician and student workers.
Manage the daily operation of the Schneck Lab which includes working closely with investigators to assess their needs and develop protocols to meet their individual needs.
Monitors biohazard/radiation safety standards and proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Responsible for routine operational activities such as; ordering supplies and materials, reviewing inventory, maintaining up to date records of tests, etc.Preventative maintenance of equipment.Monitors inventory levels and proper storage of materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.
Reports and records outcomes/results. Does electronic billing entry for work done in lab. Exchanges routine information in an appropriate manner requiring good oral and written communication.Regular interaction with students, vendors, post-doctoral fellows, faculty members, and other clinical fellows.

Education:Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, chemistry, or related field required.Master's degree highly desired.
Experience:Minimum of 4 years related clinical and/or research laboratory experience performing relevant or related techniques required.Advanced knowledge of good lab practices required.Individual must to work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision making skills and good judgment.Previous working experience in a cellular immunology and/or cell biology lab is preferred as is working experience with mouse models. Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Special Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities / Competencies:
Ability to handle and experimentally inject mice, gavage mice, collect samples and ear-notching etc.
Advanced organizational skills a must.
Excellent record keeping and documentation skills, required.
Work Environment /While performing the duties of this job:
Work will require physical work, including a lot of time standing, walking, climbing, bending and reaching.Daily tasks include lifting (40+ lbs).
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand and walk up to 85% of the time.Frequently required to traverse throughout the laboratory; to other work areas on campus.In some areas work space may be confined.May be required to climb on step ladder to complete some assignments. The employee is required to operate computer keyboard, laboratory instruments, and small laboratory tools such as pipettes; as well as able to handle small animals.
Prolonged vision requirements including viewing computer screen, paper reports/documents, laboratory notes, charts and results.
Laboratory environment – Lab has biological hazards including infectious materials and radioactive materials. Assistance with regulatory compliance for animal, IBC and Radiation Safety will be required.
Exposure to toxins and infectious agents exist, but potential for personal injury or harm is minimized if established safety and health precautions are followed.Must refer to and are expected to comply with proper laboratory protocols and safety policy/procedures, and be familiar with material data safety sheets in assigned work areas.Working in laboratory where there may be discomforts due to odors, noise, temperature fluctuations, and working around lab equipment.Use of personal protective equipment may be advised or required.
Staff may be required to complete annual competency review, and must insure compliance with Johns Hopkins Policy, Laboratory Policy & Procedure, Health, Safety & Environment regulations, and all applicable privacy & confidentiality laws/practices.
Schedules will include expected weekend work and/or holiday assignment to check on mice.Required to report in the event of inclement weather or other emergency to check/care for mice.
