Reporting to the Manager of District Energy Systems, the Supervisor will be responsible for the day to day operation, repair and maintenance of the utility production and distribution of the Manhattanville campus boiler and chiller plants, as well as all the auxiliary systems and machinery, including the energy transfer stations located in the various campus buildings. The Supervisor manages workload across the unit to ensure a timely and quality response for service. Determines the most effective manner to allocate resources during periods of peak demand. Coordinates work activities with all levels of staff, including the clients and other supervisors as well as contractors and vendors. Establishes performance standards to meet the service expectations of a broad client base and productivity measures to identify and track progress and customer satisfaction.
The Supervisor will be working directly with the Manager of District Energy Systems on the day to day responsibilities and will be responsible for training the other Supervisors and employees on the high-pressure boilers in preparation for the NYC High Pressure Stationary Engineer's License along with associated certificates.
The Supervisor will be the primary person to verify experience for qualified employees applying for the High-Pressure Engineer Certification (Stationary Engineer Certification (High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer) Experience Verification Form).
The Supervisor is responsible for monitoring and maintaining records of preventive maintenance on all applicable equipment and is directly responsible for tracking daily work performance; ensuring work is being performed effectively and efficiently.
Assists in the preparation of requisitions, contracts, RFPs', and purchase orders.
Develops and implements systems and processes to establish and maintain records for the DES.
The Supervisor is responsible for the CMMS utilization by the DES personnel and ensures work is properly documented and completed in a timely manner.
He/She oversees forepersons and workers to ensure the safe and reliable generation and distribution of utilities to the Manhattanville Campus and provides technical expertise in the operations, maintenance, repair and controls of the DES.
The position will apply professional principles and judgment to assist with the planning, leadership, operations, maintenance, and administration of the DES.
The supervisor will ensure effective operations and avoid unsafe conditions or service interruptions in any of the plant functions.
Assume the duty of the Manager of the DES in the Manager's absence, also acting as the Manhattanville campus facilities engineering supervisor.
Supervisor will assist in open shift coverages.
Bachelors' degree required; candidates may substitute 6 years of related professional experience in lieu of the degree requirement.
In addition to the degree requirement or its equivalent, the optimal candidate must have a minimum of 4 years of demonstrated supervisory experience (union/non-union) in the operation and maintenance of power plant, high pressure boiler plant or chiller plant >1000 tons. NYC High Pressure Stationary Engineer's License and NYC Refrigeration Engineer's License required.
Minimum of 4 years of progressive responsibility in power plant, high pressure boiler plant or chiller plant operations. Strong familiarity with steam generation, and chilled water generation and their associated systems and controls required. Strong familiarity with different Computerized Maintenance Management Systems required.
Computer literacy and experience working with spreadsheets required. Strong communication and interpersonal skills required. Excellent oral and written communications skills. Knowledge of OSHA guidelines, engineering standards and compliance with all cities, state, and federal regulations.
Candidates must be able to work a flexible schedule for operational needs, for example, shutdowns and emergencies. Must be able to meet the physical and environmental demands of position, including frequent lifting, carrying, bending, pushing, pulling in a plant environment. Manhattanville campus will include over 7MM sq. ft. and over a 40-acre area.
Employees are required to be Tuberculosis (TB) negative, submit to periodic TB testing and a chest x-ray if a positive TB test is read.
Will be required to obtain following NYC Certificate of Fitness within timeline determined by department: Fire Guard (F-60), Powder Activated Tools (E-21), Torch Operations (G-60), Operate and Maintain Air Compressors (A-35),City Wide Sprinkler Systems (S-12), City Wide Standpipe Systems (S-13), Standpipe for Multi-Zone Systems (S-14), Supervision of Bulk Oil Plants (P-12), Fuel-Oil Piping and Storage in Buildings (P-98), Handling, Use, and Storage of Flammable Compressed Gases (G-98), Storage, Handling and Use of Hazardous Materials (C-91). Federal Class A PBS Operator will be required.
Experience working in a hospital, healthcare facility or in higher education preferred.
