The College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University invites applications for an Assistant Scientist III position for the Michael Cho laboratory within the Department of Biomedical Sciences (BMS). The major goals of the laboratory research program and this position are: (1) to design and to evaluate immunogenicity of novel antigens that can elicit broadly neutralizing antibodies against HIV-1 and influenza virus; (2) to characterize biochemical and structural properties of antigens in order to facilitate better understanding of their immunogenicity and subsequent structure-based immunogen design, and (3) to develop novel antigen-delivery platforms for inducing potent humoral immunity.
This position will be involved in various aspects of vaccine research and development, including structure-based immunogen design, molecular cloning and production of immunogens, immunization of small laboratory animals (e.g. mice and rabbits), evaluation of antibody responses through serum analyses (e.g. ELISA and neutralization assays), next-generation sequencing of polyclonal antibodies, hybridoma production, and molecular cloning and production of monoclonal antibodies.
The position will provide general laboratory management, including supervising and training junior laboratory members (post-doctoral associates, graduate students, and undergraduate students), equipment training and maintenance, and supply ordering. The position is responsible for preparing Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) protocols, preparing manuscripts for publications, and assisting to write research grant proposals. The position will also be required to aid in Gold Sheet routing and Cayuse 424 submission as requested.
The successful candidate will be motivated and possess the ability to work both independently and collaboratively both within the laboratory and with outside associates. The candidate will also have the ability to balance and prioritize tasks, meet program deadlines and produce results. The ability to communicate orally and in writing is also essential for this position.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 5 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 3 years of related experience; or a Ph.D. or other professional degree and related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
PhD in Molecular Biology, Virology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Immunology, or other related fields
Experience in molecular biology, protein biochemistry and immunological techniques such as cloning and recombinant protein expression, protein purification, ELISA, SDS-PAGE, and PCR.
Experience in mammalian cell culture and virus handling at BSL-2, protein production, hybridoma production and maintenance, and virus neutralization assays.
Experience in handling (injection, bleeding) small laboratory animals such as mice and rabbits.
Experience in laboratory management and mentoring of junior laboratory members
