Research Support - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
A full-time position at the Junior Laboratory Technician level is being offered at the University of Minnesota – Southern Research and Outreach Center at Waseca, MN. This position is responsible for conducting chemical analyses of biological samples, such as feed, blood and urine, assist with surgical or other experimental procedures and maintain and clean laboratory equipment.
The main function of a Laboratory Technician is to perform laboratory procedures in the swine research facilities. Animal care 100%
Cleans, washes, and disinfects animal rooms and cages
Feeds and cares for pigs from pregnant sows, lactating sows and wean to finish pigs
Mixes and weigh feed for designated animals. Orders and stores feed and supplies and prepare animals for shipment to other units or market.
Keeps records on feeding, weight, breeding, disposition and shipping of animals.
Inspects the physical condition of animals regularly for signs of illness or injury. Makes preliminary diagnosis of the condition, consults the unit supervisor, and administers the proper medication as advised.
Sterilizes and cares for surgical instruments
Shaves, disinfects and prepares animals for surgery
Assist in surgical operations by operating anesthesia equipment and infusion apparatus
Assist in animal surgery by tying of blood vessels, passing instruments, cutting and holding internal parts, locating organs and closing up animals.
Assist with and performs post mortem examinations on animals, removing various organs for further study and writing autopsy reports on findings.
There are collaborative research activities with the Departments of Animal Science, Food Science and Nutrition, Agronomy and Plant Genetics, Soil, Water and Climate, Veterinary Population Medicine, Surgery, and Bio-products /Biosystems Engineering.
Essential Qualifications: High school graduation/GED and/or experience with laboratory equipment
Preferred Qualifications: Associate's Degree with Laboratory Technician Experience.
Must have the ability to handle samples and laboratory equipment. Ability to keep records, communicate effectively, maintain favorable public relations and willingness to perform other assigned duties. Knowledge of swine production procedures will be an asset.
