The Department of Surgery is seeking a Nutrition Specialist who will provide in-house nutritional services for bariatric surgery patients as part of their pre- and post-surgical care. Duties will include: providing medical nutrition therapy and follow-up for pre and post-op bariatric surgery patients referred from primary care physicians. -delivering individually tailored medical nutrition therapy to adults who have complex and chronic conditions requiring particular attention to detail, and using experience and skill to ensure patient comprehension. -providing nutritional assessment which involves conducting a diet recall, collecting data from the patient and the medical record and evaluating the data. -monitoring and interpreting subjective data, anthropometric measurements and laboratory results to evaluate patient compliance and response to the prescribed program. -managing nutrition services in the Department of Surgery, focusing primarily on bariatric surgery nutrition services. -participating in patient education planning and evaluation, development of educational materials and data collection for special projects. -development, coordination and oversight of a medically managed weight loss program through the Department of Surgery. -developing educational materials, holding information and education sessions for patients, developing and monitoring program budget, and working with vendors to implement and manage a successful medical weight loss program. -participating in education conferences and seminars for medical professionals and for the public who are interested in surgical and medical weight loss programs. -providing dietary instruction to patients participating in research studies according to study protocols. Bachelor’s degree in foods and nutrition dietetics or public health nutrition; or completion of an ADA Dietetic internship with ADA Commission. Eligibility for Dietetic Registration preferred. The Department of Surgery is a multi-faceted organization in a complex organizational structure. It is a department within the School of Medicine with the attendant responsibility for medical education and research. The department includes 35 full-time faculty members in the sections of: transplantation surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, pediatric surgery, surgical oncology, trauma and acute care surgery, bariatric and general surgery. It also includes three research labs. There are 63 employees in the department on the clinical and support staff.
