The Department of Health Behavior & Society are currently hiring Peer Liaisons to work as a part of a large community-level intervention aimed to reduce HIV risk and increase community cohesion among female sex workers in Baltimore, MD. The intervention is largely centered around promoting the services at a full service drop-in Center for sex workers, called SPARC. This role will conduct community outreach, in groups of 2 or more, to promote SPARC Women’s Center in Pigtown. Additionally, they will promote the Center; conduct HIV/STI prevention and harm reduction education; distribute condoms, resource lists, center promotional items, calendars and flyers detailing Center activities. They will also be trained to administer and distribute Naloxone, an injectable medication that can reverse the effects of an overdose of opioids (i.e. heroin, oxycontin, fentanyl). All outreach activities will take place in South Baltimore, including Pigtown, Carrol Park, Mount Clare, Cherry Hill, and Brooklyn.
Peer Liaisons will also provide support and peer navigation for a new PrEP initiation and adherence program based out of SPARC Women’s Center. They will provide direct support to women starting and maintaining PrEP usage, through a number of interactions including face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and logistical support (e.g., appointment scheduling, arranging transportation, accompaniment to medical appointment.). They will also help conduct PrEP focused engagement sessions, in an effort to shift social norms and develop support around PrEP initiation and adherence. Peer Liaisons will undergo extensive training to understand existing CDC guidelines for PrEP, frameworks for trauma informed care, and structural barriers for PrEP adherence.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Engage in harm reduction-based street outreach, promoting Women’s Center services and events, distributing promotional items, and providing harm reduction education.
Build rapport with community members, including sex workers and local business owners through outreach, and attendance at community association meetings.
Distribute Naloxone, train community members on its use and benefits.
Assist with need assessments and the development of outreach plans to inform Center programming.
Work in the Drop-In Center, assisting with client intake, laundry services, shower services, mail services, addiction management services, as well as other SPARC services and activities.
Support women engaged in STAR – PrEP through face-to-face meetings, phone calls, and logistical support (e.g., appointment scheduling, arranging transportation, accompaniment to medical appointment.)
Document interactions with STAR – PrEP participants to fully characterize the peer navigation approach to adherence support
Facilitate peer groups and trainings focused around barriers/facilitators of PrEP uptake and adherence, structural barriers, and healthcare access.
Garner feedback about center programming, intervention’s delivery format, and group session teaching modalities, to inform intervention implementation.
Support case management activities, as needed
Support volunteer program, as needed
Assist with center event planning and activity scheduling
Communicate regularly with senior staff to provide updates and feedback

High School Diploma/GED and some related experience
Prior interview and field work experience, e xperience working with diverse populations including the sex worker population desired. Successful candidates will undergo training sessions prior to working in the community.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
