Reports To: Director of Content Planning and Intelligence

Position Summary: The Staff Writer/Editor will report to the Director of Content Planning and Intelligence and will have demonstrated experience writing, proofreading, copywriting, editing and executing internal and external communications as well as developing public relations efforts to support the strategic marketing objectives of the university. This role supports public relations, publications, website content, social networks, and advertising as well as internal and external communications through writing and/or editing/proofreading. The individual also will support special projects and publications, including but not exclusive to annual reports and periodic magazines. The candidate should have experience in writing for various formats, including press releases, print/digital advertisements, news/feature stories, web content, announcements, and business correspondence. Moreover, the candidate should be able to take a story/news/event and format it for the appropriate media channel or communications vehicle.
Prerequisite Qualifications: ? Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or closely related field ? Three years of specific job-related experience, including writing, proofreading, and editing. ? Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written. ? Proven knowledge and skills in the writing and positioning of communications and promotional efforts, annual reports, brochures, website content, press releases, news/feature stories, etc. ? An understanding of media relations, public relations strategies, techniques and practices, and media responsiveness. ? Knowledge and application of Associated Press Stylebook rules, regulations, principles, practices and writing techniques, including grammar and punctuation. ? Skill in the operations of a PC with Internet, operating system, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software as well as experience and knowledge of a variety of software and online tools and resources. ? Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize and successfully manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously. ? Demonstrated abilities in project management. ? Proven attention to detail and a demonstrated ability to ensure brand and quality control. ? Ability to analyze situations and recommend solutions. ? Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with diverse groups of people. ? Ability to work under pressure while meeting urgent deadlines. ? At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
