Business Operations Specialist:
George Mason University's Office of Entrepreneurship & Innovation (OEI) resides within the Provost's Office, and facilitates collaboration and coordination across entrepreneurship-related courses, academic concentrations, co-curricular programs, faculty support and community-facing programs. The OEI is focused on advancing and facilitating the commercialization of inventions and other innovations developed by Mason students, faculty, staff and alumni. OEI also works collaboratively with stakeholders across the university to encourage entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial mindsets among Mason's students, faculty, and staff. OEIoversees Mason's primary entrepreneurial support organizations, including the Office of Technology Transfer (OTT), the Mason Enterprise Center (MEC) and the Mason Innovation Exchange (MIX).
The Business Operations Specialist reports to the Associate Vice President for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (AVP). The Business Operations Specialist has primary responsibility for all administrative, financial and HR functions within the OEI, and leads an internal team to support these functions. This position collaborates closely with the AVP and the OEIleadership team to establish the OEI's strategic roadmap and to implement, scale and sustain OEI programs.
Finance Related Duties include:
The Business Operations Specialist will oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process for the OEI and its affiliated programs; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep the AVP and OEI leadership team abreast of the organization's financial status. Implement and oversee a financial management/reporting system; ensure that the billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements; oversee the accounting and financial/fiscal processes for all OEI and affiliated organization/program accounts. Analyze and present financial reports to the AVP, senior leadership, and other internal/external stakeholders; oversee the management of organizational cash flow, forecasting and reporting; strategize with OEI organization/program personnel on creating new revenue streams and increasing and efficiently utilizing existing revenue streams. Assist in the development of fundraising including commercial revenue, grants, sponsorships, and donations; develop strategies to encourage new or increased contributions; oversee the compilation and development of materials to submit to granting or other funding organizations.
Administrative and HR Related Duties include:
The Business Operations Specialist will collaborate with other OEI leaders to: create position descriptions; hire, supervise and train employees; educate employees on organizational and program goals; lead employees to encourage maximum performance and dedication; provide professional development and work/life balance opportunities; oversee and review HR related requests and processes. Oversee OEI administrative functions to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales; oversee the development, implementation, and management of all necessary business policies and accounting practices; ensure OEI and associated programs are following all GMU financial, fiscal, administrative and HR policies and procedures. Collaborate with OEI leadership to create, implement and sustain the workflows, administrative processes and personnel levels necessary to the OEI and affiliated organizations and programs. Assume responsibility for timely reporting to senior management and/or internal/external stakeholders; effectively communicate and present the critical financial, administrative, and personnel related matters; work closely and transparently with all external partners. May be required to perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or business; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.
Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with — programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds.
Commitment to training programs that maximize individual and organization goals across the organization.

A multitasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment.
Hands-on working knowledge of both federal and university grants management accounting policies and procedures; Experience in managing multiple fund accounting sources; Experience establishing reporting systems to meet university and federal requirements; Experience working concurrently with multiple sub-recipient organizations; Experience conducting financial reviews to ensure compliance and sound fiscal management;
Hands-on experience with small business issues and/or assistance programs; Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Demonstrated customer service orientation; Working knowledge of computer software/hardware;
Experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area, and
Significantly demonstrated experience in a very active complex financial and/or accounting environment supporting grant, sponsored programs, revenue-based programs, etc.
Overall professional experience, ideally with broad financial and operations management experience. Five + years preferred;
Experience overseeing a human resources function;
Experience with University accounting policies and procedures.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.
