The Student-Athlete Success Program seeks a highly independent and team-oriented academic counselor, with creative ideas with a strong background regarding student support and development. This position will provide academic counseling for the men’s basketball program. This position includes planning and coordinating academic support for student-athletes in these sports to maximize their use of University academic support resources. This position will provide ongoing academic counseling, and monitoring of academic progress as it pertains to the university and NCAA. This role will be expected to communicate with prospective students, coaches, athletic administration, faculty, advisors, and other campus partners to ensure a high level of student support and success. The academic counselor in this role will be expected to develop and implement academic enhancement programs that promote retention and graduation. A successful candidate should have a strong knowledge of the principles, practices and trends of academic advising for student-athletes and individual counseling techniques.
Master’s degree in subject area related to program specialty.
At least five years of experience (in the past eight years) working in the area of student development and/or student-athlete academic support services at a Division I academic institution.
Proven ability to work effectively with student-athletes from diverse ethnic, educational and cultural backgrounds, and familiarity with the academic and social issues faced by students.
Demonstrate a concrete working knowledge of NCAA eligibility rules and regulations.
Ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff and university constituents.
Demonstrate a strong understanding of academic integrity issues and other trends within the NCAA and how to actively monitor those challenges.
Excellent organizational, interpersonal and decision-making skills
Strong written and verbal communication skills
Demonstrated ability to work effectively within a team setting to accomplish program’s goals.
Available to work non-traditional hours, including frequent evenings and occasional weekends/travel.
Working knowledge of factors that influence the overall development and academic achievement of student-athletes and the proven ability to support those students.
At least one year of experience working with men’s basketball or football student-athletes at the Division I level
Skilled application of the Microsoft Office Suite, with emphasis on Excel, Word, and PowerPoint, Moodle. GradesFirst, and Blackboard experience a plus.
Able to demonstrate the ability to teach Life Skills topics.
