Thomas Nelson Community College is located on the Virginia Peninsula in the heart of Hampton Roads, a region renowned for being the birthplace of America and home to communities rich in culture and industry. Thomas Nelson is a comprehensive community college, offering more than 80 programs of study leading to an associate degree, certificate, or career studies certificate. Founded in 1967, the college currently has an annualized enrollment of over 12,000 students and 7,000 FTEs in credit classes. An additional 5,000 students benefit from non-credit instruction. The college is served by over 110 full-time faculty, 300 adjunct faculty, and 300 staff members. The primary communities served by the college are the cities of Hampton, Newport News, Poquoson, and Williamsburg, and the counties of James City and York. *The Position* The Director of Advising oversees all areas of academic advising at the college and is a senior leader in the Student Affairs division of the College. Advising is an essential service at Thomas Nelson and this position is critical to the overall mission of the institution. The Director is responsible for designing, leading, training, and assessing programs and services that support student learning, as well as those that enhance the retention and persistence of students as they progress successfully towards graduation. The Director ensures students receive advising and other services necessary to achieve their educational goals, works with students to remove barriers to their success, and provides support in a manner easily accessible to all. *Duties and responsibilities* * Plans and organizes Academic Advising ensuring the unit is providing high-quality support services. * Assists with creating and supporting the strategic direction of the department, executing on improvement plans, and supporting cross-departmental goals. * Develops and implements an advising model that links intentional curricular choices to student goal attainment. * Oversees and implements technology platforms, such as Navigate, used in advising. * Participates on campus and college committees, as required. * Identifies opportunities to create, improve, and implement innovative services that support student success and retention goals. * Develops and implements Student Advising policies and procedures, ensuring college policy is adhered to by department staff. * Directs, plans, organizes, and provides leadership to the day to day operations of Academic Advising. * Provides leadership, vision, and direction for campus-wide academic success programs and initiatives, promoting a culture of undergraduate persistence and achievement. * Fosters positive energy and positive morale for the staff. * Supervises and develops professional and administrative staff. * Manages daily operations of the Advising Centers and staff, which involves recruiting, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating peer advisors. * Works out of multiple offices where staff are located â requiring travel between work sites and active participation and supervision of multiple project areas. * Develops and manages unit budgets. * Leads efforts to increase retention and strengthen academic support services. * Develops and implements a comprehensive strategic plan for academic support and intervention programs. * Advises and counsels students regarding educational issues such as course and program selection, class scheduling, college adjustment, study habits, and career planning. This includes understanding the academic requirements of the various majors in all the fields of study. * Provides leadership and guidance for the development and delivery of programs and services designed to enhance the academic success of students from orientation through graduation. * Oversees and implements the College's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) and leadership of the QEP implementation committee. * Supervises academic support and intervention programs including Peer Advising and other academic support programming. * Consults with faculty, administrators, and campus partners regarding academic advising and academic support issues.
