Research - Laboratory/Non-Laboratory, Staff/Administrative
General Summary/Purpose: Under the general supervision of a faculty investigator or laboratory supervisor, is responsible for performing routine analyses and tests on animal, human tissue and primary cells as well as human cultured cell lines. Work requires basic use of scientific methods, procedures and techniques gained through previous training and experience. Uses basic understanding of theory behind experiments and applies basic analytical skills to implement assigned projects, and to identify and trouble-shoot situations needing special attention.
Specific duties & responsibilities: Follows established procedures or protocols and utilizes aseptic technique to perform laboratory tests and experiments which include: basic tissue culture and isolation and culture of cells from human and animal tissue, cell exposure assays, basic molecular biology including Western Blotting, immunofluorescence, confocal microscopy, live imaging, qPCR and animal injections.
Detailed record keeping and maintenance of a physical or electronic lab notebook. Systematic and detailed data maintenance for future verification.
Operates basic laboratory equipment such as centrifuge, pH meter, analytical balance, incubator, scintillation counter, spectrophotometer, light and confocal microscope, and utilizes laminar flow hood. In addition, will need to learn our cell exposure set up. Operates lab computers for data entry.
May utilize in vivo models in experiments. Following experimental protocols, monitors animals and maintains health records in accordance with USDA and AALAC guidelines. Sacrifices and dissects animal remains as required. Prepare tissue for study utilizing histochemical techniques.
Bleeds and injects animals according to protocols.
Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, electronic mail, World Wide Web, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports.
Harvests primary cell cultures from blood and/or tissue specimens. Maintains primary cell lines through procedures which may include passaging, cryopreservation, transfection and/or cloning.
Maintains and makes minor adjustments to equipment, e.g. calibrating, alignment.
Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace.
Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training, as appropriate.
Uses sterile techniques to avoid contaminating lab experiments.
Uses universal safety precautions to protect self and co-workers from biohazardous materials, including blood-borne pathogens.
Monitors inventory levels, orders materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, counts orders upon receipt.
Oversight of undergraduate students in the lab.
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
BS/BA, or equivalent, in biological sciences, chemistry, or physics
Six months related work experience.
Preferred: Post-undergraduate experience in a comparable laboratory, or a significant independent research project, not related to normal course requirements. Comparable laboratory experience may be substituted for educational requirement.
