The Engineering and Computing Education Program in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track, full-time teaching position at the rank of Lecturer or Professor of the Practice beginning Fall 2019.
It is expected that the selected candidate will initially teach the Introduction to Computing (COMP 101) course. However, a key component of this position is the collaborative development of an inclusive first-year experience for computing and engineering students, based on COMP 101 and other existing offerings. The candidate will also be expected to effectively collaborate with other faculty to incorporate social and ethical aspects of the computing and engineering professions into first-year course offerings. Expectations of this position will be a combination of teaching, professional development and research. The anticipated teaching load is 2 or 3 course/sections per semester but teaching expectations may vary based on the expertise and interest of the candidate.
Minimum qualifications are:
• Master’s degree in a computing discipline or Computing Education, and • prior college-level teaching experience.
Preference will be given to candidates who, in addition to the above, have
• a Ph.D. degree in a related discipline, • demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year computing courses, • an ongoing commitment to advancing computing education, as demonstrated through innovative teaching and pedagogical practices and published research, and/or • computing industry experience.
The selected candidate will be part of the new Engineering and Computing Education Program (ECEP) within the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT). The goals of ECEP are to establish multidisciplinary pathways for educating the next generation of socially and ethically conscious computing professionals and engineers. ECEP will also advocate for scholarly, evidence-based teaching within our college, conduct leading-edge computing and engineering education research. It will also serve as an incubator for new ideas and programs that shape the future of computing and engineering education.
