ART AND DESIGN - Full-time, academic-year lecturer in Graphic Design/Interactive Media in the Art and Design Department, College of Liberal Arts, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California, to begin September 12, 2019. Recruitment is for up to two positions. One-year appointment with possible renewal. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, developing and teaching undergraduate graphic design courses from introductory to advanced, with a focus on developing students' skills related to interaction design, motion graphics, and other screen-based media. Classes may include those that introduce basic digital techniques in the Adobe Creative Suite and those that address design for websites, mobile apps, motion graphics/animations, brand identity campaigns, package design, book design, and visual communications for print. The successful candidate will contribute to an accredited BFA in Art and Design with concentrations in graphic design, photography and video, and studio art. The teaching load is 3 classes per quarter (fall/winter/spring), 45 units total across the academic year.
Candidate must have strong skills in interactive/user-centered design and traditional graphic design, creative engagement in design research and professional work, excellent communication and problem-solving skills, knowledge of contemporary design issues and design history mastery of appropriate software applications for both interactive and print communications, and ability to teach industry-standard technical skills to undergraduate students.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
An MFA or a Bachelor's degree (BFA, BA or BS) in Art & Design or other related/relevant field and equivalent professional experience (3 to 5 years of industry experience) in interaction design or graphic/visual communication design by time of appointment, strong evidence of professional interactive work and technical ability, and interest in working within a liberal arts environment are required.
Two or more years of college level teaching experience in interaction design or graphic/visual communication design is preferred. Industry experience strongly desirable. Teaching experience in standards-based web development and familiarity with industry standard programming languages, comprehensive knowledge of UX/UI prototyping tools, understanding of accessibility in relation to user-centered design, interest in cross-disciplinary collaborations, strong ties to the professional design industry, and college teaching beyond graduate assistantship are preferred.
Following a conditional offer of employment, a background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate may start work with Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo.
