The Instructional and Computing Services at the School of Public Health, University of Michigan invites applications for a Systems Administrator Intermediate position to provide computing services. This position will play an important role in the School, focused primarily on 3 areas: support for researchers using University-provided, high-performance computing cluster (“Great Lakes”); managing a number of virtualized application servers; providing desktop support (Macs specifically) for faculty and staff.
In collaboration with the Unix System Administrator in the Department of Biostatistics and with other members of the ICS team, provide support to researchers using Great Lakes HPC cluster: promote use of Great Lakes; provide orientation and onboarding; troubleshoot problems, escalating more difficult onesInstall statistical software packages on the cluster.
Install and maintain application servers in a managed, virtualized environment (PaaS) provided by UM ITS (Linux and Windows).
Maintain high level of security of data and systems.
Make or request needed policy changes on the virtual firewall provided by UM ITS.
Help provide support and troubleshooting to the growing contingent of Mac desktops and laptops.
Seek input from individual faculty and staff on their computing needs and provide recommendations and/or feedback to the Director of ICS.
Maintain comprehensive documentation of our systems and procedures.
Keep skills updated by taking advantage of training opportunities and relevant conferences.
B.S. in Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
2+ years practical experience with computing in a cluster environment, with some scripting ability; user account and file rights management, package management and software updates.
Knowledge of firewall rules and ability to make or recommend changes to those rules as required.
Experience in providing end-user support for Mac OS desktops and laptops.
Ability to evaluate, recommend, order and install application servers in a virtualized environment.
Strong communications skills with ability to convey technical concepts effectively.
