As a staff member within Student Life, the Assistant Director of Fraternity & Sorority is responsible for setting the direction and advocating for the development of co-curricular programs and services that support student learning within fraternal student organizations. All efforts are in the service of creating learning environments that: celebrate diversity, foster student development and provide leadership development opportunities.
Primary areas of focus include
student organization advising, consultation, and oversight;
administrative responsibility for areas of specialization within Fraternity & Sorority including sexual misconduct prevention, bystander intervention, and supporting alcohol and other drug abuse prevention.
program development, implementation, assessment, and evaluation.
Student Organization Advising (55%)
Advise, consult with, and provide direction for the executive board members of the Interfraternity Council, Multicultural Greek Council, National Pan-Hellenic Council, and Panhellenic Association, with primary responsibility for the supervision of the ten-member Interfraternity Council Executive Board.
Manage crises related to student organization behavior, attending to the immediate needs of involved students and their families. Serve as a liaison with the inter/national headquarters. Make decisions regarding a course of action for organizational improvement, consulting with the inter/national headquarters, local advisors and University of Michigan administrators. Advise, consult with, and provide direction for the chapters, council, and general membership of the Interfraternity Council.
Assist councils in the creation and facilitation of activities designed to create a cohesive fraternal community and be able to constructively serve as a resource for their respective communities at large.
Work with chapter alumni advisors and housing boards by providing resources and educational programming to assist their support of collegiate chapters, officers, and housing.
Provide general education, direction, management, and leadership development opportunities to individual students and chapters to enhance student organization effectiveness. Areas addressed include academic performance, physical and psychological health/wellness, risk management, career aspirations, interpersonal conflict, social identity and justice, and personal and leadership development.
Provide oversight and direction on Council financial concerns to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Provide conflict resolution for individual students, between student organizations, and with other community entities such as law enforcement and neighbors.
Demonstrate knowledge, skills in multicultural competency and expertise in the prevention of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs.
Provide specialized leadership in and focus on harm reduction and bystander intervention.
Together with other office staff, advise Greek-related committees, honor societies, and task forces such as PRISM, Greek Week, Order of Omega, Gamma Sigma Alpha, Greek Activities Review Panel, Social Responsibility Committee, and Hazing Task Force. Facilitate the training of these groups’ leaders and provide educational programming for their members.
Provide intervention when student behavior is potentially harmful to others, the community, and/or is self-destructive. Develop a course of action and education that will improve safety, reduce harm, and minimize critical incidents and risk.
Provide resources, information, and education to students, their families, faculty, staff and the greater community regarding student involvement in fraternal organizations. Educate individual students and student organizations about their rights, privileges, obligations, and resources as they relate to living and learning in the University and local communities.
Lead and participate in University-wide committees including establishing liaison relationships with other departments, participating in roundtable discussions, and attending periodic meetings with student services offices across campus.
Assist in the preparation of the overall departmental budget, providing documentation of evidence supporting requests for additional University funds.
Participate in strategic planning efforts including implementation of the FSL Strategic Plan, implementation of the Achievement Expectations Program and development of annual unit goals.
Program Development and Management (25%)
Design departmental program goals for the fraternal community.
Initiate and facilitate curriculum for leadership education and other proactive educational and risk management programming for the fraternity and sorority community.
Initiate partnerships with faculty, staff, students and student organizations consistent with unit goals and priorities in order to identify and recruit support for program development and implementation. Train participating, staff and students.
Establish program evaluation strategies and research agendas for new initiatives.
Hire, supervise, train and evaluate program manager(s) and graduate interns.
Supervise graduate interns in accordance with students' academic program expectations and professional standards.
Maintain communication with graduate interns’ academic programs.
Supervise the ten-member Interfraternity Council Executive Board.
Education: Master’s degree
Experience: Minimum of three years’ full-time experience working professionally in student affairs administration or working for fraternity/sorority inter/national headquarters
Specialized Knowledge: knowledge of and experience with the application of student and leadership development theories within Greek-letter organizations;
Work Authorization: Must have the ability to legally work in the United States
Master’s degree in Higher Ed Administration, Counseling or Social Work
Professional Certification: Membership in a Greek-letter organization
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
Specialized Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate knowledge in the following areas: promotion of physical and psychological health/wellness, diversity and inclusion, sexual misconduct prevention and response, prevention of high-risk use of alcohol and other drugs, leadership development and hazing prevention.
Ability to work independently and multitask.
Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
Strong administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills; knowledge of and experience implementing best practices in risk management
Position requires ability to work a flexible schedule, including frequent evenings and weekends.
This position requires the ability to travel to various campus locations. The ability to move and transport items weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds, etc.
The person in this position routinely moves through the facility to attend meetings/events and access files or information.
