SUMMARY The Assistant Manager, Instructional Machine Shop serves an important role in fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment within SEAS and the FAS Department of Physics. The ideal candidate demonstrates a passion for instructing and working with students; training, coaching, mentoring and sharing their knowledge and expertise in machining; and ensuring a safe shop environment. This position interacts with students, researchers, staff, faculty, and external vendors. The ability to communicate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and at all levels is essential for success.
This position reports administratively to the Assistant Dean for Teaching and Learning, while reporting day-to-day to the Director of Fabrication and Student Shops. This is a term position for 18 months from the date of hire, with the possibility of renewal and/or conversion to a regular staff position.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructs students (undergraduate and graduate) and post docs on various machine shop and fabrication techniques. Delivers extended Shop training 1-on-1 and in small groups.
Collaborates and consults with faculty members and the Director of Fabrication and Student Shops on research, student projects and shop related activities.
Overseas machining/fabrication activities in the Instructional Machine Shop during regular Shop hours. Supervises student and temporary employees who work in the Shop.
Develops and maintains written standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Shop users.
Serves as Safety Officer, ensuring safe working policies and procedures are implemented and followed within the Instructional Machine Shop. Delivers safety trainings for new users. Attends monthly safety committee meetings, and consults with internal Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) to ensure the Instructional Machine Shop complies with health and safety regulations and standards. Monitors and reviews after-hours incidents as needed.
Identifies and evaluates equipment needs in consultation with the Director, faculty, and shop users.
Seeks and implements cost efficient purchasing practices; monitors inventory and replenishes as needed. Communicates with vendors to obtain quotes, and prepares purchase requisitions. Tracks equipment maintenance records, hardware warranties, contract expiration dates, related software updates and license renewals.
May perform physical tasks related to machine shop work, which may include occasional lifting, handling and carrying up to 50 pounds; climbing ladders or step stools; pushing/pulling; bending, squatting, and reaching over head.
Duties may change in response to business needs.
Finalists will be tested on basic machining and teaching/training skills as part of the interview process.

A High School diploma or equivalent
3+ years of work experience in a machine shop environment
Experience with manual machine tools, CNC controls, CAD software, and CAM software
The ability to communicate professionally and work effectively with all types of people, including faculty, students, researchers and staff from diverse backgrounds is essential.
Ability to create and deliver training one-on-one and to groups. Related experience is preferred.
The desire to improve depth and breadth of machining knowledge/skills and engage in on-the-job training is essential. A strong interest in learning and developing management skills is important; managerial experience and basic experience with financial and/or inventory management is a plus.
Completion of a 2-year and/or 4- year mechanical/engineering/technology program, or a strong interest in doing so, is highly preferred. (Working knowledge in the disciplines is more important than formal academic training.)
Experience with basic equipment troubleshooting and repair, and quoting jobs in a machine shop environment is a plus.
Basic computer proficiency - word processing, database management, spreadsheets, and email is required. Ability to learn new software/systems is essential. Prior experience with Prototrak, MasterCam, and/or Solidworks are a plus.
The ideal candidate will be capable of juggling and prioritizing multiple tasks, and working effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Flexibility and the willingness to take on new responsibilities as needed is essential.
Must be able to work full-time on site, Monday through Friday, during regular shop hours.
Ability to stand for long periods
Ability to work in an environment where the noise level may be moderate to high at times
Ability to travel between multiple work locations on campus as needed
