Associate Director for Residential Education - Office of Residential Life and Learning - (19001318)
The Office of Residential Life & Learning supports dynamic co-curricular learning and engagement for all undergraduate and graduate students living on campus within the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Engineering, and the SMFA at Tufts. It partners closely with colleagues across the division of student affairs and with other AS&E and university-wide departments (including health and wellness, community relations, campus police, facilities, university counsel, undergraduate education, and the university chaplaincy) on a wide variety of campus programs and initiatives. More specifically the department develops programs and policies that foster community, promote citizenship and provides students with a residential experience that is a significant component of their education at tufts.
The Associate Director for Residential Education will have broad responsibility for building vibrant, co curricular living communities designed to facilitate students' personal and intellectual development at Tufts. The Associate Director will supervise and support a team of two professional Assistant Directors, nine Resident Directors, and approximately 120 Residential Life student staff. The Associate Director will lead this team to plan and implement a comprehensive series of programs to support inclusive and respectful living spaces on campus. The Associate Director will support all undergraduates in-residence by 1) developing and implementing a responsive and innovative leadership model encompassing all levels of staffing within residential area teams 2) delivering a comprehensive, year-round residential education curriculum to build skills and depth of knowledge within professional and student leader staff using campus experts and outside presenters 3) designing topical and developmentally appropriate programs for the campus community.
The Associate Director will lead the recruitment, competitive selection, training, supervision and growth of residential life student staff and assume a leadership role in supporting and enhancing the University's Special Theme Housing system. As a senior member of the Residential Life & Learning department within the Division of Student Affairs, the Associate Director will 1) work with student and professional staff to resolve conflicts arising in the residence halls 2) serve as a member of the ORLL on-call rotation and oversee the in-residence on call system 3) update departmental publications and policies, including all Residential Life staff training curricula 4) serve as a point of contact for individual students in addressing community standards and specific climate concerns through the Student Conduct Process and 5) represent the department on various campus committees. The Associate Director will also take on special projects and other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life & Learning.
Bachelor's degree required. Master's degree in applicable field such as higher education or student development strongly preferred.
At least 4 years experience in student affairs, residential life, or student development in a higher education setting or residential secondary school environment
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including experience facilitating complex community dialogue and supporting peer-led training
Ability to maintain focus and juggle multiple time-sensitive tasks to completion while continuously reassessing priorities in a busy, reactive setting
Experience supporting community and student leader development around topics including: active listening, conflict resolution, health promotion, social justice, diversity and inclusion, class year-specific developmental programming and crisis management
Excellent relatablity and demonstrated connection, rapport with traditional college-age student leaders
Ability to work independently and as part of a team while keeping a sense of humor
Master's degree in applicable field such as higher education or student development strongly preferred.
Experience supervising residential staff in a college environment, overseeing student staff training programs, and developing training curricula
Professional staff supervision experience highly preferred
Proven ability to develop and maintain productive, collegial working relationships with students, parents, staff and community members
Training in intergroup dialogue, conflict mediation, or related skills
Willingness to facilitate conversations around issues of identity and privilege, including race, gender and sexuality
