SUMMARY: Multiple bacterial taxa that stochastically establish either acutely lethal or lifelong persistent infection in D. melanogaster, with both infection outcomes observed among populations of genetically and experimentally identical flies. The probability of either outcome is variable depending on host genotype and physiological status. We are recruiting a postdoctoral associate to study the bacterial genes that mediate the switch between lethal versus persistent infection.
BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: The Postdoctoral Associate will carry out independent research under supervision of the PI, Brian Lazzaro. Specific systems to be interrogated may include bacterial responses to immunological stresses such as antimicrobial peptides and reactive oxygen, quorum sensing and cooperative mechanisms such as biofilm formation, or entry into and exist from persister status. The specific experiments to be pursued will vary depending on the skills and interests of the person who fills the position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct independent research on the bacterial genetic basis for chronically persistent infection of Drosophila. Lab responsibilities will include design and performance of experiments that involve bacterial genetic manipulation, bacterial genomics, and bacterial infection of D. melanogaster with measurement of subsequent infection outcomes. The appointed postdoc will be responsible, in cooperation with the PI, for data analysis and preparation of primary research manuscripts that describe findings.
Research (100%) This is a one-year term position, renewable depending on funding, available work, and performance.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Biology, Genetics/Genomics, Evolutionary Biology, Microbiology, or related discipline. The strongest applicants will have experience with Drosophila genetics/genomics and a demonstrated record of success in research. Ability to work independently and as a member of a team is critical.
