Departmental Overview Founded in 1930 through a gift from John D. Rockefeller, Jr., International House Berkeley's mission is to promote cross-cultural experiences and leadership skills for a world of greater understanding. Since its founding, more than 90,000 individuals enrolled at the University of California Berkeley and other Bay Area colleges and universities have resided in the historic facility adjacent to California Memorial Stadium along Piedmont Avenue. During the academic year, nearly 600 residents from 75+ nationalities (including the USA) reside in the building which has six floors of residential rooms. The facility includes a conference center featuring the Chevron Auditorium with a capacity of 350, several other smaller meeting rooms, plus a library, and a dining commons with a capacity of 325. With a renewed emphasis on the acquisition of intercultural leadership skills, I-House strives to augment and expand the impact of the residential life experience by encouraging lifetime personal and professional connections that transform lives and offer skills that enrich and enhance career opportunities.
Responsibilities The incumbent will perform semi-skilled and skilled cleaning, housekeeping and/or general maintenance duties. Examples of duties may include the following tasks: cleans assigned areas, housekeeping of resident rooms, services trash and recycle bins of offices and/or outside trash/recycle bins, sweeps and wash outside areas and sidewalks using industrialized equipment, sweeps and mops rooms, hallways, stairways and public restrooms, replenishes supplies, washes walls and windows, gathers and disposes of trash and wastes, cleans, waxes, polishes, and shampoos floors and carpets using industrial, mechanical cleaners and polishers, move office and residential furniture and objects, clean light fixtures, tops of windows, doorframes and other high areas, polishes furniture and woodwork. Report repairs and equipment failure. Provides directions and answers questions to general public.
Required Qualifications This position requires education and experience demonstrating possession of the knowledge, skills and abilities described above. A typical combination would include graduation from high school or its equivalent plus one (1) year of experience performing custodial work at a heavy traffic facility with high interface with the general public.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
To perform the typical task and duties of the position successfully, the knowledge, skills and/or abilities listed below are required,
Common cleaning tools such as mops, brooms, vacuums, scouring devices, wax applications, outdoor sweepers, power floor waxers, tools and polishers, etc.
Proper handling of cleaning chemicals and materials.
Safety practices and procedures in handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Ability to operate assigned custodial trade machinery including vacuum and floor cleaners, shampooers, polishers and buffers.
Perform routine repetitive hand movement activities and tasks on a continuous basis.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties and to work as a team.
Work under deadlines and coordinate several concurrent assignments.
Work with minimum supervision.
Follow oral and written instructions.
Read, write and speak English language effectively in order to follow directions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs., climb stairs and ladders.
Knowledge of computers a plus.
