The Science Education Fellow is a community-based position that supports the work of Science in Society, a research center dedicated to science education and community engagement. The Fellow will work as a part of the Science Explorers program and focus on mentoring and tutoring freshmen at Mather High School in Chicago as well as afterschool programming at Lake View High School in Chicago. Fellows will work under the direct supervision of Science in Society staff and spend significant time at the high schools for the purpose of implementing science education programs for underserved youth. He/she will work closely with students, teachers, and school administrators. These fixed term positions of 10 months provided recent college graduates with the opportunity to promote STEM engagement and make a difference in the community.
Responsibilities include (but are not limited to) leading science curriculum with urban youth, mentoring students, fostering relationships with teachers and staff, and assisting with program evaluation. The Fellows support the educational research projects led by Science in Society and as such, are critical members of the research team. Fellows will receive training and structured feedback as a part of this program.
Please Note: The Science Education Fellow will work primarily in Chicago-area schools and/or community centers. They will spend some time (a few hours week) in the Science in Society office in Evanston.
Develop engaging, hands-on science activities and lessons for high school youth.
Coordinate supplies and materials for science lab activities.
Help prepare and clean-up lab activities.
Manage program space, ensuring that the space is clean and organized.
Recruit and supervise youth participants.
Build and maintain strong relationships with teachers, administrators, and program staff.
Tutoring and Mentoring
Lead instruction of inquiry-based science curriculum, including biology, chemistry, physics, and/or engineering activities.
Work regularly in small groups with high school youth, providing instruction, tutoring, and academic remediation.
Attend multiple program sessions at the schools: up to five days a week.
Provide mentoring and support to youth from low-income and underserved background.
Coordinate and lead afterschool tutoring sessions with youth.
Support classroom learning in partnership with teachers on an as needed basis.
Participate in an orientation and training session with Science in Society staff.
Attend regular meetings with Science in Society staff and other Science Education Fellows, approximately once a week.
Arrange and attend meetings with teachers.
Support program evaluation activities, including administering and collecting surveys, interviews, and observations.
Regular communication with parents as dictated by program needs.
Performs other duties as assigned.
College-level coursework in biology, chemistry, and math (algebra or higher). Must have successfully completed one year (two semesters or three quarters) of each subject with an A or B final grade.
At least three months of experience working with K-12 students as a camp counselor, tutor, mentor, etc.
Must get fingerprinted and pass a background check.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
A bachelor’s degree in a STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) or science education major.
Previous experience teaching science to youth in either a school or out-of-school setting.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Preferred if applicants have their own car or other mode of transportation to/from the school.
Available some evenings and/or weekends.
