Under supervision of the Principal Investigator, the Otolaryngology Research Associate assists in performing research and laboratory work by performing various research procedures including small animal surgeries for various imaging experiments. Record observations related to these research experiments. Organize and maintain mouse colonies. Prepare and section tissue samples using cryostat. Stain various tissues using immunohistochemical techniques. Keep accurate and updated records of experiments and present the results and data in lab meetings. Order and maintain lab equipment and supplies as needed. Maintain a functional clean, safe and orderly lab environment. Train new lab personnel. Assist in scheduling and organizing studies with various collaborators.
Theoretical knowledge of a life science in a field related to the research being conducted. Related fields may include any of the following fields of study: molecular biology, biology, immunology, and/or biochemistry.
Demonstrated laboratory experience in molecular biology, immunology and tissue culture techniques. Experience working with animal and human tissues.
Ability to work in a laboratory setting and knowledge of laboratory operations and procedures. Ability to prepare solutions and reagents. Experience working and maintaining a sterile environment.
Proven skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment, such as confocal and quantitative fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, flow cytometer, and scintillation counter. Some of these skills may be learned on the job.
Ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Ability to following experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
Ability to read, comprehend and discuss research materials. Ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication and research proposals.
Knowledge of radiation safety and bio-safety techniques and practices. Experience working with chemical, radioisotope, and biological hazards and recognizing safety problems.
Excellent organizational skills to order and maintain lab equipment and supplies. Experience with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies.
Proficiency using operation of a personal computer and various software applications and packages, such as MS Word and Excel.
Ability to coordinate studies with the lab and other departments. Demonstrated skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
Strong communication skills (verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively in the work environment, and effectively and accurately document research procedures.
Strong skill in accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data. Effective time management skills.
Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.
Knowledge of UCSD Environmental Health and Safety requirements.
Ability to write with correct syntax and grammar to clearly communicate ideas and protocols in writing to EH&S.
