Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):
Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of full-time professional experience in proposal research and development. Grant writing and/or proposal writing experience. Experience coaching and editing writers of varying skill levels and providing constructive feedback. Proficiency with computer software (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.).
Additional years (4+) of related experience. Demonstrated understanding of logic models and fundraising practices. Understanding of and experience in the environment of private fundraising at a major public institution. Knowledge of the principles and practices of writing major gift proposals for fundraising purposes. Experience in university fundraising profession.
Brief Description of Duties:
The Proposal Development Coordinator will assist in achieving the goals of the Office of University Advancement related to building strong private philanthropic support from individuals, corporations, foundations and other organizations for Stony Brook University. The incumbent will successfully support fundraisers through the editing process toward a final proposal document that is coherent and cohesive in its presentation, free of distracting inconsistencies and completely responsive to the stated review criteria and/or donor's interests.

The selected candidate will have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills, exercising strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail. They will need to demonstrate experience as a versatile and persuasive writer with excellent research, grammar, spelling and proofreading skills. Also having a familiarity with academic, scientific and/or technical subjects and a demonstrated ability to translate these into persuasive proposals and cases for support. Essential for this role is the adeptness to work independently as well as part of a team with a collaborative approach to problem-solving. A successful candidate will have the ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and advanced computer skills.
Responsibilities of the position include:
Edit proposals and other documents and make recommendations for consistency in content, organization and format, language and writing style.
Edit proposals and other documents and ensure cohesiveness and critical thinking, for example, are the unifying themes clear, consistent and brought to the attention of the reader and does this project avoid duplication of effort with other projects funded by the same individual/corporation/foundation.
Edit proposals for completeness to ensure that all relevant content is included in sufficient depth.
Edit proposals and ensure conciseness and clarity, key tenets of scientific prose.
Recommend practical solutions for making narratives more cohesive and compelling.
Edit and improve proposals for overall strength of case for funding.
Research and compile information/data required for proposals.
Meet proposal deadlines by establishing priorities and target dates for information gathering, writing, review and approval.
Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.
This is a full time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
