Under supervision and guidance, participate in laboratory research projects to cultivate, modify, and analyze microalgae. Prepare sterile growth medium, inoculate and evaluate growth by cell counting and densitometry, and harvesting cultures for analysis. Prepare materials for and perform algal growth experiments. Perform random and standard mutagenesis and transformation with recombinant DNA constructs.
Perform analysis of growth rate determination, measuring lipid content by fluorescent staining, monitoring cell sizes and chlorophyll content, cell cycle stages, fluorescence microscopy, determining intracellular protein localization. Perform imaging flow cytometry and analyze resulting data. Responsible for maintaining complete and accurate records. Prepare plots, graphs, summaries, and reports.
Assist in laboratory maintenance and other molecular biology projects as needed, including replenishing lab supplies and washing and sterilization of glassware.
