The stewardship officer is responsible for developing and implementing strategies and processes supporting gift acknowledgements and other forms of recognition, and donor stewardship. Reporting to the director of stewardship and donor recognition, this position also will help with implementation of a robust donor stewardship plan and with a timeline to ensure timely and periodic touches and contact with annual and major donors. The primary responsibility of the stewardship officer will be writing high quality donor communications.
Gift/Donation acknowledgment letter generation and mailing using alumni development database and OneNote.
Manage donor acknowledgment database maintenance and produce and analyze monthly reports from donor database. Use reports and complex mail merges to accurately produce donor acknowledgements.
Work closely with leadership, gift officers, and the communications team to manage all aspects of stewardship from inception to closeout.
Ensure all acknowledgment letters are written, processed, and mailed to donors in a timely manner.
Prepare electronic and hard copy donor history reports annually and upon request.
Participate in Advancement team meetings and provide reports, as needed.
Ensure donors receive feedback on the difference they have made through a variety of communication channels to include:
Working with the director and the communications team to provide information for internal and external audiences to convey the impact of philanthropy across both print and digital.
Assist with the production of an annual Donor Impact Report to send to existing donors and for use in cultivation of new donors.
Produce customized reports for major donors.
Draft personal acknowledgement and stewardship letters (including condolences and congratulatory letters) for signature by Law School leadership and gift officers.
Notify all communicated parties about memorial and honorarium gifts.
Assist with coordination of stewardship events, including annual Student Thank-a-Thon and scholarship dinner(s).
Ensure donors receive appropriate publications (annual report, year-end greetings, etc.
Manage stewardship calendar to ensure stewardship activities are timely and donor-centered.
Work with director of stewardship and communications team to develop and facilitate timelines detailing systematic touches, contacts, and upcoming events and projects.
Broadly assist with coordination of and communication to donor constituency groups, including Honor Roll of Donors and/or recognition programs to acknowledge donors at the appropriate level and retain long-term donors.
With the director of stewardship, identify opportunities for enhanced or expanded stewardship and ensure compliance with the University’s stewardship guidelines.
Provide administrative support for the stewardship director
Assist with non-stewardship office projects and initiatives

Bachelor’s Degree and at least five years of professional experience in a fundraising or communications function, preferably within an academic setting
Demonstrated ability to conceive and write creatively for various audiences, as well as edit and proofread
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work independently and collaboratively, as well as part of a team in partnership with colleagues and other key stakeholders
Knowledge of Microsoft Office, including the ability to do complex mail merges.
Ability to manage and implement complex processes
Ability to work in partnership with others in a collaborative role
Strong organization, planning, and problem-solving skills
Experience managing and implementing multiple projects
High level of initiative and energy, as well as excellent problem solving skills and judgment in situations requiring independent initiative and tact
Occasional evening and weekend work will be required
Experience with DART, Business Objects, WebNow (ROI), and OneNote.
Knowledge of University of Michigan structure, policies and procedures.
