Under general supervision, the incumbent uses professional engineering concepts to design and prepare engineering plans and specifications of moderate complexity for novel laboratory equipment and instruments in the EnVision Arts and Engineering Maker Studio located in the Structural Materials and Engineering building (SME). Collaborate with faculty and researchers in the design and assembly of engineering lab experiments and exercises employing power supplies, function generators, scopes, and logic analyzers using engineering principles and techniques. Oversee the assembly, fabrication and testing of designs and devices to ensure that the prototypes and designs meet needs. Independently design and assemble electronic circuit and mechanical prototype devices for a variety of research projects. Develop and document tutorials for fabrication methods. Prepare documentation to support designs.
In support of faculty development and instruction of E4 classes, incumbent executes functional tests and debug experiment prototypes by setting up and running routine tests. Provide recommendations and/or ways to improve projects. Serve as technical resource, providing advice to faculty and graduate students on equipment/experiment development and execution for instructional lab projects. Assist the director on equipment/experiment design and execution of projects and experiments. Assist with lab components associated with course curriculum.
With minimal instruction, manage the daily operations of the Maker Space labs. Develop day-to-day processes to keep the labs functioning in an efficient manner. Manage and maintain scheduling and preparation of labs to ensure equipment, parts and tools are assembled and operative for instruction. Comply with EH&S and CALOSHA requirements in labs and studios. Respond to general questions and emergency situations. Lead tours, hosted workshops and building demonstrations.
Working knowledge of engineering principles and methods in order to independently perform professional engineering design work of limited scope and complexity.
Knowledge of design and construction of specialized laboratory equipment and furniture and renovations.
Knowledge of equipment maintenance scheduling and repair procedures.
Skills in evaluating usefulness and serviceability of furniture and equipment.
Demonstrated supervising experience.
Demonstrated experience with laboratory safety. Knowledge of personal protective equipment.
Working knowledge necessary to begin independent application of principles, practices and procedures in the completion of assignments.
Organizational abilities and decision-making to prioritize work assignments.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in a collaborative manner, to assist in identifying any challenges or barriers.
Demonstrated ability to provide a high level of customer service to satisfy the needs of a wide variety of students, faculty and staff, and to effectively interact with diverse populations with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy.
Ability to interact with students, faculty and staff on a congenial basis to establish a good working and learning environment for classes and in labs/shops.
Demonstrated experience and skill in communicating and training people with a non-technical, non-production background.
Skill in following basic instructions and providing input and feedback as required.
