Reporting to the Executive Director provides leadership and advocacy focused on optimization of IT services for approximately 350 departmental users (faculty, staff, students, researchers). Supports administrative and research computing, with special emphasis on sensitive data, interfacing with researchers, faculty as well as technical, legal, and IRB staff. Reviews data-use agreements, develops data-protection plans.
Responsibilities include (but not limited to):
Interact with students, staff and faculty to ensure that research administrative computing services provided are accessible, appropriate, reliable, easy to use, etc.
Serve as primary point of contact between Research Computing, Institute for Quantitative Social Science and the Department.
Participate in inter-department committees regarding the design systems of research and administrative systems (security, storage, access, etc.)
Communicate on a regular basis with system engineers about non-departmental research systems utilized by our researchers.
Serve as dept. representation on interoffice IT projects (migrations, storage, email, security, website, etc. in cooperation primarily with HUIT.
Manage special projects, such as migration of administrative directories to a structure that would be aid compliance with the General Record Schedule as well as subsequent migration of same to cloud services (Office 365).
Participate as lead technical resource in project to overhaul and expand department website. Additionally, serve as technical lead on internal website and communications tools alongside the Associate Director and Webmistress.
Attend meetings of technical and administrative organizations (within FAS and Harvard) to learn what tools and resources other people are using to find out what types of supports are available, and to keep abreast of HUIT, OSP and IRB processes and policies.
Advise and collaborate with researchers at various stages of the IRB and OSP approval processes, to guaranty accuracy of information and efficiency of the processes.
Develop data-protection plans in cooperation with OSP, IRB and HUIT, that conform to Harvard's requirements (data security levels 1-5) and data-use agreements.
Manage 20+ Mailman listservs.
Work to advise leadership on new emerging tools to the support new administrative communications projects.
Manage security and access to 3 secure rooms accessing high-risk confidential information.
Support users with scientific datasets and the various formats they come in as well as the manipulation and format transfer of same
Interface with faculty and graduate students regarding secure manipulation and processing of large data sets.

Union: 00 - Non Union, Exempt or Temporary
BA/BS required. Minimum of 5 years IT experience with at least 3 years in network operations. In lieu of degree, 8 years of progressive IT experience with direct experience in a research environment.
Experience working with technical and legal documents. Experience writing data-protection plans and data use agreements.
Certifications related to the human-subjects research, computer security, and management of a Windows or Linux network environment a plus.
Solid understanding of networking fundamentals and security.
Ability to learn new technologies quickly. Good conceptual and applied understanding of Linux and Windows network operating systems as well as personal computer operating systems, applications and hardware.
Understanding of scientific software such as MATLAB, Stata as well as MS Office.
Must have excellent interpersonal skills and a positive customer service orientation.
Proven ability to communicate clearly at all levels of the organization is essential.
Demonstrate clear, concise and precise communications both in verbal and written format.
Ability to problem solve and work collaboratively required.
Ability to quickly read complex legal documents and respond promptly to same.
Ability and willingness to provide emergency support outside of standard work hours.
