The University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine Division of Nephrology is seeking a Research Specialist Lab . The primary function will be to execute advanced molecular biology assays, immunohistochemical assays, animal studies, interpret data and report results. The desired candidate must be comfortable executing tasks independently following set protocols, with minimal supervision from senior researchers. The Research Specialist will also be involved in training new lab members and/or rotating/summer students in basic methods that are specific to our laboratory.

Perform independent project(s) and participate in the design of research studies. Compile, analyze, and interpret research data using various relevant computer software applications. Maintains accurate and up-to-date records of experiments performed.
Administer day-to-day laboratory operations including monitoring the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies.
Perform laboratory research activities such as: Western blots, PCR, protein isolation, protein assay, cell culture, small animal surgery, electrophoresis gels and DNA/RNA/Protein/miRNA extraction, animal surgery, etc.
Conduct library research and participates in editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations and computer graphics for publication. Contribute to the preparation of journal articles and grant proposals. May assist with presenting research.
Will maintain animal colonies and will be responsible for breeding, genotyping (tail sniping, DNA extraction, PCR).
Complies with biohazard/radiation safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace. Completes annual university biohazard/universal precaution/radiation safety training as appropriate.
Monitors inventory levels, order materials and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures, count orders upon receipt.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education: Bachelors in Biology, Chemistry or in a field of study related to the research of the laboratory.
Experience: Three (3) years in laboratory research including two (2) in relevant research specialization involving small animal studies (maintenance of mouse colonies, genotyping, & set up breeding) .
Other: May consider a combination of directly related experience and education.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Detail oriented, able to keep clear experimental records, have effective organizational skills, and be able to prioritize workload appropriately.
Ability to perform multiple tasks efficiently and correctly.
Ability to cooperate with others.
